The fact is if you join the Army, depending on your role you will have to deal with the chance of dying. Thats all there is to it

My cousin is in the army. Since he joined he has got married, had two kids, he then went on a 6 month tour and came back to find his missus being rusty corn-holed by another man. He's been injured through shrapnel wounds and was out of work for 8 weeks with no compensation. He lives in a shit house in Andover or in a base in Germany. He never sees his family and friends but he fucking loves it.

I thought it was. After all that, he still loves it.

Re: Im thinking of joining the army
The idea of being a soldier is you give your life to the country.
If you are willing to do that and are happy to do that then go ahead.
If you want a wife, kids, marriage and actually enjoy these things then don't bother.

The thing is though, if it was say WWII and there was a proper reason to go to war I could appreciate, but to give up your life to fight for oil and all other corrupted reasons for the current war, well, fuck that,

Bad idea, not only could you get killed or spasticated, more importantly than that, it's morally wrong. You're not joining up to defend the country, the country will get by fine without you, what you are doing is joining up for the money, and potentially killing people for money.
A load of mindless morons will tell you you're a hero though.

Where did he say he'd be joining up just for the money?

Experience. Career development. Discipline. Honest belief that you're helping your country (even if you disagree that's the case, lots of people believe it. And while your and our military are indeed involved in some shit they shouldn't be, they're also doing some good things in some places as well). Anyway, killing isn't the only thing you do in the military. Most people in the military will never kill another human being and most of them will never see combat, even in times like these (although, a male in his late teens/early twenties is the most likely to see combat eventually). Nonetheless, there are lots of skills you can learn in the military.

They all sound like pretty selfish reasons to kill someone, or even risk it.

Re: Im thinking of joining the army
My brother joined the army and was killed, been bitter about that for a while but through him I've grown up with his army buddies as close friends, after they've served (and while they were in the reserves) they obviously went on to do other things, some were very successful (a friend of his became an engineer) others don't (one killed himself due to PTSD) and some are in the middle, struggling with injuries while trying to live a normal life, or just not as successful. This was in the early 2000s though which is sort of a different time, all I can say is do all the research you can on what joining the British army/navy/airforce would entail for you, consult your family and see what's up. I would suggest not going and finishing school, but to each his own.

Do you think people shouldn't join the police force either?

No, I don't see how that's comparable. The Army could be reduced to 1% of its present size tomorrow and nobody in this country would know the difference apart from having to pay lower taxes.

Re: Im thinking of joining the army
There's a risk you will have to kill somebody while in the course of one's duties a police officer as well. A much lower risk than the military, but still a risk. I agree with you in principle about the military being too big. Regardless of how big the military is, there is always a chance it will be involved in a war, justified or not.ResurrectionRooney wrote:menalawyerguy wrote:ResurrectionRooney wrote:They all sound like pretty selfish reasons to kill someone, or even risk it.

The police are crucial to our everyday lives whereas the army or not. The police will only shoot someone when they pose an imminent threat, and even then it will only be specialist firearms officers, in my country at least, where we have sensible gun laws.

And I guess, in the army, those that are targeted are weaponless and possess no reason to harm anybody. Why did nobody tell us the Taliban posed no imminent threat.
Also, no point mate. Army people get paid less than footballers. It's a disgrace apparently.

The Taliban wouldn't pose a fucking threat if we weren't going into their country!
It's not a disgrace that army people get paid less than footballers, it's perfectly right that that should happen. Not getting into this debate again though.

I was being sarcastic. Hence the 'apparently'.
But I guess you are right, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda have only ever done anything bad within the borders of their own country.

I could've swore that was the war in Iraq, which was completely pointless and troops were risking their lives for oil.

You telling me the Afghan war is completely above board?
