Studying Law
Recently it's entered my head that I might want to go on to study law in 2 years time. Has anyone studied or is studying law able to give me some tips on what it entails and what I should expect etc?

Well, you can't really until post-grad.

Re: Studying Law
After your first four years of university, after getting your bachelor's degree, you can go on to get your master's or doctorate, after your master. You can only enter law school after you obtained your bachelor's.

^^^
weird
For us in new zealand you study for one year in a conjoint (two degrees ,most common is bachelor of law and bachelor of arts) After that one year, the top 100-150 people go onto just the degree of law. (1000-2000 people try)
If you get in expect a shit load of work.

Re: Studying Law
As Rolo said, law school is like med school. You have to have an undergraduate degree (B.S.) and taken certain courses before applying to law school in the USA. You also have to take the LSAT exam (like the MCAT). If you handle more years of studying, then go after it. I personally can't study for another 2-4 years right after my undergraduate. If I decide to continue education in the future, it will be a 2 year MBA degree a few years down the road. It's either that or CFA.

Re: Studying Law
Get a law degree, take professional exams then become a lawyer is what I think the route is here.

How many years does it typically take to get a law degree?

Usually 3 to 4 years, I think...

Re: Studying Law
There's an awful lot you have to get through before practicising Law, the 3-4 years doing your degree is just the start. I've studied it this past year as a minor but the amount of stuff you have to go through to become a legal professional is staggering, 7 or 8 years at least, and you'll probably fail.

I'm starting legal studies in a few weeks and my Dads currently at Uni to become a lawyer. Law has to be something you're really interested in and can read a lot on for it.

Re: Studying Law
I think the qualification process in the UK entails 4 years at uni (and I think the last two are a beast) and then you have to do hands-on training at a law firm or clerking for a court or something like that for two more years before you qualify. I think it's a tad easier to qualify in the UK than it is in most U.S. states but in my opinion, the regimen makes more sense and will make you a better lawyer. As ahly and others have mentioned, in the US you have to go through 4 years of undergrad, 3 years of law school and then you sit for the bitch mother of all cocksucking eyeball gouging qualifying exams. If you get through that, you are a lawyer, qualified to represent murder suspects, money launderers and multinational slave driving corporations from day 1, even though you may have never seen the inside of a courtroom or law firm at any prior point in your life. All you have is all that book learning but no hands on experience. Most law schools do indeed offer clerkships and you can always take a non-paid or very low paid clerkship at a law firm during your summers, but it is not a requirement. I think the two year residency (if you will) that the UK requires is more sensible. Good luck.

Re: Studying Law
I'm going into Law hopefully too if not English.. apparently they prefer students that didn't take a law A level (I'm taking it to A2) which is strange.

Re: Studying Law
Presumably they don't really care if you don't have it since the first year will probably be getting everyone up to scratch anyway. If you have an A level in say Biology as extra I guess it shows them other skills which they may be looking for.

Nothing personal, but most people do fail.
