Shearer and his representatives are holding talks with Cardiff officials over
the vacancy and although no agreement has been reached so far it is
understood that he has been offered the job and it is expected a formal
announcement will be made on Wednesday.
That would mark a return to frontline football for Shearer following a
two-year hiatus that followed his ill-fated spell in charge of hometown club Newcastle
United.
That period at the helm resulted in relegation from the Premier League and
scuppered his chances of being placed in charge on a long-term basis by
owner Mike Ashley.
The Cardiff role would give the former England and Newcastle skipper the
chance to revive his touchline reputation which nosedived after his eight
games in charge on Tyneside yielded just one win.
Until now Shearer has spent his football career in the top flight of English
football and while the Championship
would represent a journey into uncharted waters for someone who makes a
living watching the Premier League as a Match of The Day pundit, the
new job would not be without pressure.
