Championship play-off final win 'worth £90m' Empty Championship play-off final win 'worth £90m'

Post by Guest Sun May 29, 2011 11:44 pm

The Football League Championship play-off final on Monday will again be worth about £90m to the winner, accountancy group Deloitte has calculated.

That is how much money either Reading or Swansea City will pocket if they are promoted to the Premier League - the biggest prize in domestic football.

The £90m includes more than £40m of higher broadcast income, gate receipts and commercial income next season.

The club would also get payments of up to £48m if immediately relegated.

Paul Rawnsley, director of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "In financial terms, the Championship play-off final offers the winning club the most substantial prize in world football.

"Promotion offers an unparalleled, and potentially one-off, opportunity to strengthen the foundations of a club for years to come, through sound investment in long-term infrastructure, in addition to the expected player acquisitions in the short term."

Reading are hoping to return to the Premier League after a three-year absence.

Swansea were last in the top flight in 1983, but victory on Monday would make them the first Welsh team to enter the Premier League since it was established in 1992.

It was worth £90m last year but that didn't help Blackpool. It would probably keep Reading in the top flight though as their owner would do all he can to keep them their.

The build up of "OH MY THIS GAME IS WORTH XX MILLION" has gotten so tiring to me regarding the Championship final, when has a team actually used that cash to step up and make a consistent challenge in the Premier League, can't think of it. Neutral

To me, it's barely worth the the $20 or so I'll spend on beers while watching it at the pub.

But Cardiff and Swansea joined when there was no Welsh league, they started from the bottom, and have worked there way up. There's a Scottish League so Rangers & Celtic should stay in it.

And yes I know there's a Welsh league but it wasn't around when Swansea and Cardiff joined, so yeah. Well I believe it wasn't created when they joined shifty

Yeah I want Swansea for the same reason and also they'll be there or thereabouts next year too whereas Reading could easily just slip away, they're only in it this year because of a fantastic run at the end of the season.

Blackpool are a cheapskate club, the chairman just wants to save money. It could be good in the long term but disasterous in the short term.

The problem with Celtic and Rangers is that they want to start in the premier league, whereas Swansea and Cardiff started at the bottom and deserve to be where they are now.

It's not the ENGLISH premier league anyway. It's the BARCLAYS premier league which is based in england but not limited to english clubs.

Which is part of the ENGLISH league system. It should be English clubs only but I'm sure other countries have foreign teams they don't want. I don't like having Welsh teams in our leagues because it's a long journey and we never win in Wales.

    EDIT: Beat to it.
