Twitter is open to the world. If you're doing something illegal, you shouldn't be doing it on twitter. If he had racially abused someone, would it be ok if afterwards he said "It was just banter"?

I don't see the problem. Sure he's supposed to ignore everyhting, cause you know he's not supposed to be human, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with his response. He's not really verbally abusing the guy. He's being threatened with bodily harm and responds by stating the facts. There's little doubt that Wayne Rooney would indeed deck this internet "tough guy" in the matter of seconds. He's not threatening to do anyhting other than defend himself.

Really? I can guarantee you that if something happened, Rooney would not be able to use the "self-defence" excuse because he's asking the user to come to him.

The fact is, footballers get abused. If you can't get used to it, don't be in the sport. You should NEVER threaten fans.

Rooney just doesn't give a fuck about rules. He must think they don't apply to him. Because he plays for Man U, he's probably part right.

I think the way Rooney handled it was quite good actually. He said originally "You know where you can find me each day" and for the internet tough guy to follow up on his words.

What makes me laugh is that the person who sent the abusive message is probably a 14 year old boy posing as a man.

I like how he was specific about the club he was gonna use to stove shrek's head in. Pitching wedge.

He should have thought of the aftermath though, after all it's been in the news lately he should have had second thoughts. I personally don't think it was banter, I reckon he probably typed it in the heat of the moment and then realised he'd made an error.

It's not 'verbal' assault, it's just assault. Did Rooney intentionally or recklessly cause horrible internet scrotbag to fear for his personal safety? If yes then it's assault, if no then it isn't and no crime has been committed, simple.

Shut up. His response was always going to be taken the wrong way. He is a footballer, in a position of responsibility and any comment he makes will be scrutinised. It's exactly the same for every single professional footballer, don't make it out like the media is out to get Rooney because he has a habit of acting like a prat. If Gerrard had done it, you'd be criticising him, hypocrite.

What Rooney did cannot be classified as assault. One of the major factors of assualt is immediacy and that was absent in this case.

He was being cyber bullied and only stood up to the bully. Well done Rooney

But no, he's to stupid to realise that the media are all over him, everything he does on twitter is obviously going to be monitored, and it will be published in the paper if he starts publicly threatening people. Banter or not, it dosen't matter.

Again, unprofessional and wreckless behaviour from Rooney.

Rooney didn't stand up to the 'bully', nor did he assault him. All he did was tell him that he knows where Rooney trains everyday and to follow up on his threat.
