One of the original Busby Babes and ex North ender R.I.PIt is with great sadness that Preston North End can announce that former 1950's player Eddie Lewis has passed away at the age of 76.
Lewis, who was working as Moroka Swallows' technical advisor, died on Tuesday in a Johannesburg hospital after a battle with cancer.
The forward, who also operated at full-back, signed for the Lilywhites in 1955 from Manchester United for a fee of £9,000 due to his impressive goalscoring record for Sir Matt Busby's boys.
Scoring on his debut, albeit in a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa on 10th December 1955, the original Busby Babe only played 13 times for Preston before moving on in the early stages of the 1956/57 campaign.
Lewis did find time to score one other goal for the Club and it came against Busby's United helping Preston to a 3-1 victory in front of 28,047 inside Deepdale.
Following his time in Lancashire, Eddie played for London clubs West Ham United and Leyton Orient where he finished his career in English football.
The football mad family man moved to South Africa in 1970 where he worked as an insurance salesman while helping develop football in the country.
