A teary-eyed Manuel Neuer announced on Wednesday that he will not extend his contract with Schalke, which is set to expire in 2012. The decision comes amid widespread reports that the player will seal a transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer, with the German international once again playing down links to Manchester United.
"On Saturday I informed those in charge [of his decision not to extend his contract]," he told reporters.
Neuer, now 25 years of age, joined his hometown club 20 years ago, and was made captain this year. Throughout the conference, the goalkeeper was visibly flustered, and at times he had to stop to fight off tears.
"I always want to play at the highest level; that's the Champions League," he explained. "I want to develop myself, to make a major new step in my career.
"It was not an easy decision; I needed time to make it."
In recent weeks, the Germany international has been jeered by Bayern fans who have opposed his transfer, as well as Schalke supporters who regard his likely departure as treacherous.
"It is certainly difficult to be booed by your own family, as well as other fans," he said in response.
Neuer also revealed that his alleged links with Manchester United were complete hearsay.
"I have not heard anything of interest from Manchester United," he said.
Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt, who was also at the press conference, also weighed in on Neuer's decision.
"We regret the decision," he said. "We tried to convince Manuel to the contrary. We were aware that there were implications [of an intent to transfer to Bayern] in this decision. We have to accept and live with it."

Will more than likely come to City as a back up keeper. I heard it in a paper it must be true.

I'd feel bad for Kraft if Neuer goes to Bayern. Kraft really stepped up this year.

He'll change his mind about Germany when Liverpool come knocking. We need a back up.

Why's it being opposed by Bayern fans?

1. Neuer is an ardent Schalke supporter. They feel he won't show the necessary commitment to the Bayern cause before of his affilitaion.
2. Thomas Kraft. He looks a bit promising and the Bayern fans would rather a kid from the youth system be the number 1.

I'm not sure why Neuer wants to move. He is already at his dream club, playing Champions League football.

And Neuer went a little mad in celebrating a Schalke goal against them.Rei wrote:Woody wrote:Why's it being opposed by Bayern fans?
