    • Nearly 200 serious hate crimes detailed in report
    • Michel Platini promises 'zero tolerance' at Euro 2012

A Uefa-sponsored investigation has uncovered nearly 200 serious hate crimes at recent football matches in Poland and Ukraine, heightening fears that the 2012 European Championship finals could be marred by racist incidents.

The report, which was compiled by the Uefa-sponsored East European Monitoring Centre, discloses disturbances including antisemitic chants and banners, hooligans abusing their own team's black players and violent attacks against anti-racist groups.

The report will be released on Sunday, 15 months before the two countries host Euro 2012 and a week after an international match between Poland and Lithuania ended with clashes between supporters and police. There have been 133 reported incidents in Poland over the 18 months, according to the report, 56 of which related to the open display of racist or fascist symbols.

In March 2010, at a first division match between Polonia Warszawa and Arka Gdynia, hooligans unfurled one banner featuring a Totenkopf skull and crossbones symbol identical to that used by the Nazi SS, and displayed another which read: "Stop Islamizacji Europy" ("Stop Islamisation of Europe").

Black players in Poland have experienced hostility at many grounds and there have been 20 reported "anti-black" hate crimes, according to the report. Supporters of Lechia Gdansk demanded last year that the Brazilian Luiz Carlos Santos Deleu be the last black player at the club, according to the report.

There were 36 reported antisemitic incidents at Polish football matches. One of the most shocking took place during a third division derby between Stal Rzeszow and Resovia Rzeszow. Resovia fans exhibited a giant banner showing a silhouette of a man wearing a characteristic yarmulke in the blue and white colours of Israel. Another banner was displayed above the caricature, carrying the words: "Death to hook noses".

While Ukraine has had fewer – 62 – serious hate crimes reported at football matches, it has seen some of the most violent incidents. In August 2010, around 30 Arsenal Kyiv supporters, known for their left-leaning views, were attacked by 50 neo-Nazi fans of Dynamo Kyiv. The attackers shouted "Heil Hitler" and "white power" and an Arsenal Kyiv fan was stabbed three times in the back. Others suffered multiple injuries.

Uefa's director of Euro 2012, Martin Kallen, told a conference last week that Polish fans have a "huge image problem".

"What we saw at last Friday's match [between Poland and Lithuania] was not a very good picture to see that happening in a stadium. We and the Polish government are concerned. They are taking this seriously and will have changes in the next month."

After Poland's friendly in Lithuania 60 fans were detained after bottles, flares and benches were thrown at police. The Uefa president, Michel Platini, said in October that hooligans would be treated with "zero tolerance" at Euro 2012.

Yes, but it's England. No matter whether we are the best bid or not, we won't get it.

Us and Andorra could be the only countries that bid and FIFA would give it to Andorra.

rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

Lechia Gdansk fans regularly sing Deleu's name. He's a fan favorite.

Stal Rzeszow is a Jewish Club (well not really, but it has the title like Cracovia Krakow) so Resovia fans chant anti-Semite shit at Stal fans. This is banter, not racism. It's not intelligent but it's not against Jews. These fans are from smaller cities with small clubs and are usually uneducated skinheads. They won't be a problem at the Euro where the games are going to be played in major cities like Warsaw/Poznan/Wroclaw/Gdansk.

There is hardly any anti-black hate. Pretty much all the clubs in the Ekstraklasa have a Black first teamer, and the fans treat them like anyone else. I haven't experienced any anti-black racism in the some 80-90 matches I've been too.

I can't say anything about Ukraine though.

You Brits should be more like Poland. If any immigrants starts thinking they could boss us around, we'd chase them out of the country and into Belarus with pitchforks! Mob

Eastern Europe is full of racists, no way to play a big tournament there. Just as farcical as Qatar Neutral
Ok not that bad, but I wanted England to have the WC so badly, would be great if England got the EURO Laughing
England has no problems with racist fans, while it's a fact that Eastern Europe does.

    Don't get the wrong idea.

Eastern Europe is full of racists, and by eastern Europe I mean Russian, Ukraine, Belarus etc. (And probably the Balkans as well).

Central Europe is much more civilized. I won't deny many people in Poland have prejudices, but the racist skinheads are few and from smaller cities in the eastern half of the country, like Rzeszow. (I guess the Russians influenced them? think) The games are being hosted in four major economic and tourist hotspots in Poland, Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw and Gdansk. You will not suffer any racism if you come to Poland in 2012, I can guarantee you this.

I have zero worries about Poland hosting this tournament. There won't be any issues at all. Ukraine is the bigger question as the only semi civilized parts of the country are Kiev and heavily Polish influenced Lwow. Laughing

Well, I might only go there to watch it if Switzerland qualifies, for that matter we have to win at the Wembley Neutral And Montenegro have to basically lose all their games and we have to win them all Uefa report details hate crimes in Euro 2012 Hosts 881856
With our current team, we won't achieve this, so the EURO 12 will most likely be the first tournament after 2002 we miss Sad

Btw are there in Poland many black people, or how do people treat you when you're black?

In the last few years Poland has been receiving more and more black immigrants from Africa, as well as Turks and others. It isn't uncommon to see a Black person on the streets of Warsaw anymore I would say. Though there definitely are much less Blacks in Poland than in Switzerland or England or whereever.

How people will treat you? Assuming you go to the bigger cities like where the EURO is taking place... You'll probably get looks from passerby's on the street, but these aren't looks of prejudices or racism, these are looks of mostly "Oh Look! A Black guy!" Laughing, remember seeing a black on the street is still fairly unusual. How people will treat you? If your in a tourist area (or come during the EURO's) you'll get treated like a normal tourist. If you feel as if someone may be treating you differently, the guy probably has some prejudices of his own, just pick up and leave, find someone/place else. If you want to make an effort to get on people's good side (and this goes for you or anyone regardless of skin color), try to pick up some basic Polish and use appropriately, stuff like hello, thank you etc. Poles respond very well to this in my experience.

    ------

I'm not exactly your typical Pole either. I'm not white skinned, more darker, thanks to my Latino half. I get those same looks and get treated as a foreigner all the time. It's no big issue, if anything I am making it sound much worse than it is. Laughing Poles are generally very friendly people and I doubt your skin color will effect your experience when visiting the country.

There are alot of great places for a tourist to visit in Warsaw and Gdansk. Poznan and Wroclaw's old centers are great as well.

But the best place to visit IMO is Krakow. Krakow's old center is brilliant. It's real unfortunate Krakow isn't hosting anything for the EURO because many tourists will be missing out.
