'Keepers at top clubs have to be better than just 'shot-stoppers'. They need to be able to pass a ball, to act as a sweeper for some teams and above all else have to remain fully focused during the absence of action in their half.

I don't watch Man City so I don't remember Given and his mistakes there.
The thing is, we can't answer my original post because 'world class' keepers don't play the lower clubs. The best way we can answer this is how a 'world class' keeper playing for a smaller national team does.

But surely they are under much less pressure mentally with a better defence in front of them.

Tomaszewski was among the top 5 keepers ever, but nobody outside of Poland is going to rate him.

No, this is what I mean about you having it backwards. Ask any keeper and they'll tell you the hardest thing about goalkeeping is when you are called into action after a long period as a spectator. It is much more mentally testing to have to switch on in 1 moment of a game than it is to always be tested.

Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
Not really. You're under pressure to concentrate throughout a game, and often could be just called one to make one big save in a game. And if you've lapsed your concentration when just simply watching the action in front of you, you've conceded.James ♠ wrote:Dan wrote:'Keepers at top clubs have to be better than just 'shot-stoppers'. Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
The managers pick the keepers and they judge them via training etc not by just watching them play matches like most of us rate keepers from.
Conidence is pretty important for keepers you could have all the quality but still be made into laughing stock prime example being Fabianski of last season.

Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
Look at it this way though.
Are you more likely to make a mistake if;
a) you are going into the game knowing your team will be under pressure for the full 90 minutes and you are going to have to do everything in your power to stop them from scoring
or
b) you are playing bottom of the table and you know you wont have much to do because of the world class team in front of you and if you do happen to concede a goal you know your team will still score at least 2.

You seem to have the idea that conceding a goal is a mistake.

You wouldn't know your team would score 2. That 1 goal could cost you points against the lower team, costing you titles ect.

But you are more confident that your world class team would score 2 goals if you made a mistake than you are that you would be able to keep Barcelona out of your goal?

Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
Yes, but if you're a top keeper you don't have the shit complacent attitude that you can afford to make mistakes, and you don't go into a match thinking about what mistakes you'll make.
You seem to be trying to almost create a theory here just to be pro-smaller clubs.

Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
Worded it wrong. Clean sheets isn't a good way to judge a goalkeeper. A clean sheet usually means the whole team has defended well. (Mainly defence and midfield, in some cases the attack also)

Re: The best goalkeepers in the world
He has made far more mistakes this season than he did with Birmingham.
I agree with what James said, just because you keep a clean sheet doesn't make you better than someone who hasn't kept a clean sheet.
A 'keeper could make 5 top class saves and concede from a screamer, whilst another 'keeper might not have to do anything all match.

Julio Cesar was amazing last season for Inter.I don't really know who's been amazing this season no ones really stood out to me.
Just really like Cesar's unorthodox style.

Agreed. I'd add as well the attack could have put the opponent under pressure all game, thus no chances to concede were had.

I like Frey. He's made some unreal saves every time I've watched him.
