Because there were better English strikers around at the time, eg. Shearer, Sutton, Sheringham, Cole, Owen. There was also the cocaine business, he was quite a controversial character.

Still managed a World Cup and a European Championship.
Was just unlucky that he was in a generation where there was a massive amount of quality strikers.

that's all it was really. Shearer was unshiftable; i think sheringham was 2nd to him.. maybe rotating with cole/owen.. but it was all shearer

he was the most technical english striker in his time
i do some research abotu year ago about why he not cap much
and is because the english managers did not like his 'silly' reputation
but in truth if he was another nationality, a player of his talent would of had many caps., maybe england fears technical players like him that have big persona. look at le tissier, another great technical player but never played much for england. david dunn in his prime, obvious not a world class player but in his prime he was another good playmaker that co uld of being good contribution to england national team. if you go a little earlier in time to player like glen hoddle and chris waddle, these guys were tottenham legends and also had massive success overseas because they werebig technicals players. but england barely used these guys enough and use poor technical players linstead
instead england chose to use player like darius vasell and emile heskey which says it all about english mentality
only shearer was perhap better then fowler but fowler never had a chance to prove himself to england. he could of being english legend with his skills

Fowler and Le Tissier must be looking at the forward line now and thinking, why the f could I not be playing now?

i agree sbsp
but this is not first time it happen to technical players of england
look at waddle and hoddle
if they were italian i assure u they would have maybe 80-100 caps in their time
but perhap the english infrastructure and mentality feared their influence and they did not fit the direct english approach

and even when england do have technical player in national team why they always play them in wrong position?
joe cole was waste his entire international career in wing position. of course in this moment he is suck but in his prime he could of doing massive role if play in central role. the facts that he was still a very good player for england despite being play on wing is show his enormous talents
look at pauil scholes also, once gerrard and lampard came to town they move scholes to wing? what the fucks is this bullshits? scholes mroe technical and more useful in central role but english obsessed with players who can shot 40 yard goals and run like crazy dogs

they did very well to achieve that
but they should of having just as much as bryan robson
bryan robson is seen as legend of english footballs, but hoddle w as more gifted and talented then him but never given same c hances as robson

Hoddle didn't play much because of Wilkins refusing to pass to him and the management bummed Wilkins.

Because Alan Shearer was better when he was younger and then Michael Owen when he was getting on abit.
