Re: The Away Goals Rule
Its good in the fact that it encourages away teams to attack but on the whole I think it's shit.

Re: The Away Goals Rule
I was reading something, it was like, it's unfair cos the team who are away in he second leg, could have An extra 30 minutes to score an away goal, if it goes to extra time

Exactly. This is precisely why it should be scrapped. During the first leg, there's no chance of extra time. If all is tied after the second leg though, then the game will go into extra time and the team that is at home is at a decided tactical disadvantage because a goal for the away team is basically worth two (well, one and a half, I guess. But you get the point).

Re: The Away Goals Rule
Well why don't they just say away goals only get used after normal time. If it is equal after then then it is normal extra time, no away goals.

What an insightful analysis.

Because then the team at home in the second leg have an advantage in that they get another 30 minutes playing at home.

Well that isn't because of away goals really though, is it?
Edit: Wait, nevermind, I get it. Away goals make up for the fact that the other team is playing at home.

True. I guess either way you do it, one of the teams is going to have an advantage. I guess they figure counting away goals through extra time compensates for the advantage that the home team has of playing an extra 30 minutes at home.

Exactly. It's a good rule generally, but that's one part of it I disagree with. I'd just have it going straight to penalties after 180 minutes though, you can't exactly counter-balance the advantages of being at home with the Away Goals Rule, and being at home in a penalty shootout really doesn't make any difference.

Re: The Away Goals Rule
A tournament is to decide who the best team is, The best team shoud be able to play well both home + away without the away goal advantage
simples.

thats the luck of the draw though isn't it?
by that logic the FA Cup is unfair because the home team have home advantage!

The difference between that (for me), is that you can't really have the FA Cup any other way (not feasible to have two games for each round).
However, it's not like a knockout round has to have that rule in place. They could easily say that away goals can get you to extra time, but it doesn't have to decide it.

It gives "worse" teams a better chance......also makes the two legs more tactical.

Er...if I remember correctly his last two two-legged ties against decent opposition ended in a defeat on the Away Goals Rule, and absolute carnage in Stamford Bridge.

Always hated it. Pointless rule. No goal should be worth more than another.

I have hazy memories of Ruud Van Nistelrooy scoring a consolation against Real at the Bernebau and the commentator just screamed 'AWAYYY GOALLL!!!!' as if it was the most important thing ever.

It was a goal which made it 3-1 in the first leg at the Bernebau, it gave United a small chance of progressing rather than a microscopic one.

Re: The Away Goals Rule
Don't see what's wrong with it. The fact that the second leg goes to ET doesn't give one a huge advantage over the other. One gets 30 extra minutes at home, and the other gets 30 extra minutes to score an away goal.
