A question about full backs Empty A question about full backs

Post by Sean Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:41 am

We all know about full backs who are great attackers but can't defend, (Johnson,Alves,Bosewinga) my question is how come managers never see this and try them out as wingers, worked well for Bale.

Worked well for Marcelo too, no idea why they don´t try it.

Probably because Barcelona are full of attacking talent, and he just adds another dimension to their attack.

    But I agree with Johnson.

Johnson's pace would be better than Kuyt as a right winger

    Alves fair enough

They're more effective when they're attacking from deep and overlapping other players.

No, not better than Johnson, he's their best winger by a mile, I'm guessing you're judging their "wingers" based on FM.

Probably because a decent fullback is hard to come by whereas, decent wingers are commonly found

Post by dena Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:51 am

To be honest, I don't think anyone in the modern game is really trained to be a fullback anymore, Ashley Cole was a winger in Arsenal's youth system and was converted to a full back, Bale was converted the other way because he couldn't defend, Tim Vickery talks a lot about how when Ramieres was young he was close to becoming a fullback because he has like 3 lungs. So I think that in a pinch, these managers could actually play their fullbacks as wingers if really necessary, but training one who's like 24+ to become a full time winger is a different story.

Probably because they don't have enough cover/quality for the fullback positions or because they havebetter wingers.

    Agree,

Only a few fullbacks are trained to be great on both attacking and defensive part of the game, like Andoni Iraola. Neutral

Some are. Albertazzi trained as a fullback before being taught to be a CB, for example. De Silvestri, Balzaretti (pretty sure), C. Zaccardo, Cassani, etc. So that statement's not really true.
