Africa Cup of Nations 2015
Since Egypt aren't playing, I forgot all about this and that it even started already.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
The first group of death games are tomorrow which would hopefully liven things up again. Something that is really strange is the Asian Cup is also being played right now which probably diminishes interest in this.
Result so far:
Equatorial Guinea 1-1 Congo
Burkina Faso 0-2 Gabon
Zambia 1-1 DR Congo
Tunisia 1-1 Cape Verde

I must ask for FCB's opinion ; Do you think the African Cup of Nations have too many teams in the tournament? Some of these group stage games are tough to watch.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
No, I think 16 teams is good enough. I haven't payed attention to the last 3 tournaments though, so I don't know about the quality of the tournament these days.
Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Cameroon, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Senegal, Zambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, DR Congo are the good teams. That's 13 teams. Africa is known for its surprise results and teams, so adding a 3-4 teams to make up a 16-team tournament is not a bad idea.

Perhaps the tournament is good but the bad teams like Cape Verde are shockingly bad I think one time they gave up a goal because everyone except the keeper was standing around. I guess the defenses have been good with 1.86 goals per game average and no player has scored more than one goal so far.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
Oh this could be good... after two games played in group D every stat that is used to rank the teams for the standings is tied if somehow this stayed the same after all three games would be entertaining to see the least. Right now all four teams are 0-2-0 2 GF 2 GA 0

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
All the big teams have suffered upsets in this tournament.
That would be fun to see the final results in Group D end in 1-1 scores. Then all 4 teams would enter a drawing of lots.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
I found this gem from the BBC and none of this is all that surprising, I see this was used in 1988 so it not all that strange I suppose. I thought that if a drawing of lots was needed it would have been completed. I guess they want a lot of media coverage for this.Afcon 2015: Mali and Guinea managers criticise drawing of lots
The Mali and Guinea managers insist the drawing of lots should not be how their Africa Cup of Nations fate is decided.
A draw on Thursday afternoon will decide which side reaches the quarter-finals after they finished joint second with identical records in Group D.
"We have to solve the problems of qualification without a drawing of lots," said Mali boss Henri Kasperczak.
Guinea coach Michel Dussuyer said: "Mali do not deserve to be eliminated in this way, just as we do not."
The Frenchman added: "Mali didn't lose a game - they played very well in the tournament. I would be disappointed, but it's hard for any team. No-one deserves to be eliminated."
Guinea winger Ibrahima Traore echoed his manager's thoughts after the two sides drew 1-1 in their final group match.
"It's not fair for both teams - I don't make the rules but we could do it on penalty kicks or extra time," he said.
"The team who deserve to win would do it on the pitch. Not like Thursday.
"We and Mali will be really anxious because we don't know if we go home or stay and it's not up to us. It'll be really difficult to sleep - it's not a good situation."
Lots were originally scheduled to be drawn, if required, at the post-match news conferences but it was announced during the first half that the draw had been moved to Thursday.
The first such drawing of lots in the tournament since 1988, will now take place at a hotel in Malabo at 15:00 GMT, with the successful team playing their quarter-final against Ghana on Sunday afternoon.
Mali's Kasperczak added: "You have to respect the rules, we have no choice. We are going to be nervous, Guinea also.
"We must find a more sporting way, fairer. This does not correspond to a sporting spirit."

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
Yeah, I don't know why they have to wait for the next day to do it. The team should know as soon as possible to prepare for the next round.
But I see the teams' point. Drawing of lots is just pure chance and not really fair for the losing team. They should have played extra time or a penalty shootout after the game since they knew it would end like this at 1-1.

Even a quick game of crossbar challenge would be a fairer way of determining the winner.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
I guess they have this format set in stone and done this way if the tied teams were not playing each other on the last match day. What would you do if all four teams would have been tied?
What I would do is draw lots, but for a different purpose where the nations would be paired up for two penalty shoot outs and the two winners would qualify. All you do that the winners would have another shoot out to determine first and second place.

Yes, I understand for the rules being set in place since the beginning. But they should adjust it for this specific situation. The two teams in question were playing each other in the last round of the group stage.

Should have just had straight shootouts between the teams in the event of a draw like they do in the Euros.

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2015
I would hesitate to say that was a good save, that was just a horrendous miss from the Algerian player (I didn't see the name). Punished only minutes later by Bony the Bosman.
