    Ouya Console Empty Ouya Console

Post by Guest Thu Jan 03, 2013 2:06 am

New console being released in March, coming at a cost of £63 (available for pre-order now).

It's comes with the console, all the necessary cables, such as mini-usb to plug it into your PC etc, and 2 controllers (batteries included).

The games are free-to-play, so after you buy the console that's all you have to pay for. Games such as Minecraft, Temple Run, Angry Birds and you can even watch Twitch TV live streams with an app. Various apps are also available.

Think it will be worth buying, even if it's just for the novelty. Can hardly go wrong with the price, and there seems to be many decent games available. You can also customise the console freely, so if you know how to add more RAM, new processor, graphics card etc then you're free to do so. If you're some mad hacker, they have no problem with you fiddling with your own console.

Is the independent console? It'll be hard to sell I think as all those games are available on my phone..

They asked for a public pledge of like £500,000 ... and people signed up equating to £5million or something stupid like that.

They'll sell plenty through marketing etc, there have already been millions pre-ordered.

I mean it's good for what it is.. but unless somebody creates a really survival based Zombie game for it then i wont buy it. Why buy that when I have an Xbox which has better games.

I know this is probably a bad view on it from me but it's likely a popular POV.

It will be $79 when it comes out, but I think if you go on kickstarter, you are still able to make a $69 donation and get one.

On second thoughts, I can see this being a massive fuck up.

They're saying it will be completely open. Like almost no security measures in the software.

I give it 2 weeks from launch before someone releases some software to get all the premium content for free.

I'm talking about anti-piracy security. Who the fuck uses linux.

It took people like 5 years to be able to run back up games on the PS3.

This is an open source console. Afaik people can edit any part of the console. Who knows, this might mean that you don't even have to do anything pirate shit for this. Just drag the purchased full game on to a usb stick then upload on your computer.

That's how it is on mobile Android. This thing is going to fail if it's like that.

The console costs $99. What if the way they make money is from software.

Sony makes a loss on every console they sell.

If they thought like you they'd be fucking broke Laughing Idiot

It's hilarious because you actually think you're right. Look around, there's a reason nobody is agreeing with you.

Sony doesn't sell PS3's at a loss now, it's only when they're first released. Please actually know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.

Highly doubt that this will make any dent in the gaming market, more excited for Valve's project if you're talking about things outside of "the big three" (+ PC)

    This.

Ouya have said themselves that they ain't competing with the PS4/Xbox 720 because they quite simply can't. They're nothing like each other, aimed at different people and nowhere near the same price range.

Because they're not doing it now changes nothing.

If they had your mentality when they were selling at a loss they'd be fucked.

This console is going to be $99. The profit margin can't be great. The point still stands.

It's funny how you think you're right because you picked out the tiniest hole in my argument

    Collie is right.

He is saying they sell each console at a loss, this is common knowledge...this does not change.

PS3 consoles are not the same thing as PS3 games.

Games can come in either physical disc form (inserted into the console) or digital form which first have to be downloaded from the PS Store.

To connect to the PS Store you will need to connect the PS3 to the internet. This can be done either wired or wirelessly.

Consoles are sold at a loss, at first.

Not 3,4,5,6,7,8 years after it was released.

Neutral WHAT? Of course they are..

As the price goes down they'll be making even more of a loss.

Each console is being sold at less than the cost of manufacturing that one unit = sold at a loss.

This is why consoles are often redesigned later on i.e. to reduce the cost of manufacturing them.

They also plan to cut back on the TV shit and focus on gaming which is good news.

PlayStation is their most profitable brand.

I tried looking up the prices for the parts but it took long. I found out the Tegra 3 card costs about 25$ and the Bluetooth chip about 10$.

That's 35% not including all the other chips and shit, the housing, the controller, the packaging, the advertising.

This thing is going to rely a lot on it's appstore. Which is it's main selling point. They're bigging up that the games are all initially free but they have in app purchases.

These things can already be cracked on secure devices such as the PS3, XBOX, iPhone. The reason it's not a widespread problem is because of the effort you have to go to do it. On the PS3 you have to be on a certain older firmware, then you have to flash a new firmware that some dude made in his basement. On the xbox you have to open it up and connect a wire to the disc drive and flash that. On the iPhone you have to jailbreak with a modified firmware again made by someone in their basement. People don't want to risk their shit like that.

The ouya should be able to do all that straight out of the box. Trust me, piracy is going to destroy this.

I'm not bothered though. I'm the biggest pirate going. If I'm right about all this, I'll be buying one straight away.

If I brought one of those I would buy my games...I'm sure a lot of other people would too.

I don't pirate games. Can you still play online?

You must run into issues at some point.....what if there's a patch?

You think that's what the developers pay? They buy in batches and they probably pay 10 cent each processor when you work it out.

An OS costs us £60-70, probably costs Microsoft 6-7p each. If even that.

A PC which would cost us £150 to buy the individual parts (minus the os), PC World sell for £360 ... costs them £15 to build. All down to buying in large quantities.

    10 cents per processor....dude that's ridiculous.

How the fuck would the manufacturer even make money at those prices.

Do you have a source for this?

Of course it's not realistic, I was exaggerating to explain my point. Companies pay like 5% (altogether) of what you pay them to make it, it's ridiculous.

It's usually retailers who have ridiculous mark ups.

Buying directly from the manufacturer (and online) is usually cheaper.
