That won't do Earth any harm, galaxies are incredibly diffuse, the chances of an actual collision involving the Solar System are vanishingly small.

Need to build a giant space station which glides between stars using them as new "sun's" to gather energy to grow food etc. I don't know about water though.

The galaxy clash will barely effect Earth, but life will be extinct before then anyways because all the water will evaporate.

Must admit I thought dust clouds and other events triggered by the merger would be the end of Earth, apparently not.

Then there's the rather slim chance that Mercury could collide with Earth, and the other dangerous objects of which we've only found a small percentage of. Just read about the SENTINEL mission planned for 2017/18, specifically made for protecting humanity.
