The Premier League has confirmed it is investigating Blackpool boss Ian Holloway's decision to make 10 changes to his side.
Holloway fielded an almost completely remodelled starting line-up for Wednesday night's 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa ahead of the newly-promoted Seasiders' clash with bottom club West Ham at the weekend.
It is understood the Premier League will write to Blackpool later this week before deciding on a course of action.
A precedent was set by the league last year when Wolves were hit with a suspended £25,000 fine after manager Mick McCarthy made 10 changes to his side to face Manchester United.
However, while McCarthy admitted he made the alterations in order to give his side the best chance of defeating Burnley in the following fixture, Holloway insisted his team had not been weakened and that he had no choice because of the club's packed programme.
When questioned after the Villa clash over what he would do if the Premier League imposes the same penalty on his club, an irate Holloway said: "I'd pack in. I can't work for this madness. I would resign. They do not know what they're talking about."
Blackpool's encounter with Villa was preceded by visits from West Brom and Everton last Monday and on Saturday respectively.
Wednesday's match will be followed by their trip to the capital on Saturday, when they face the struggling Hammers.
What a joke. 10 changes and he still took Aston Villa to the last few seconds.
