Swansea City topped the Fair Play League in their debut Barclays Premier League season

Swansea City have topped the Fair Play League Table for the 2011/12 season.

The Swans, who were playing in their debut season in the Barclays Premier League, pipped second-placed Tottenham Hotspur and third-placed Manchester United to secure top spot.

And Norwich City - who were promoted to the top flight along with Swansea at the end of the 2010/11 season - have been deemed to have the supporters with the best behaviour.

Norwich were just ahead of Fulham and Sunderland in the table.

Both promoted clubs enjoyed successful seasons on the field in the Barclays Premier League - they were separated on goal difference after gaining 47 points, with Swansea (11th) just ahead of Norwich (12th).

To promote positive behaviour, the Football Association established a Fair Play competition, with all Barclays Premier League matches being assessed by delegates.

Teams are assessed in five categories, with a further category relating to the behaviour of the public.

    The categories are:

    • Red and yellow cards
    • Positive play
    • Respect towards opponents
    • Respect towards the referee
    • Behaviour of the team officials

Delegates also assess the behaviour of fans with points being award for positive verbal support and recognition of outstanding play by the opposition.

The funding for the awards is provided by the FA Charity Committee.

Swansea City were much better than I expected so I am glad they won this even if it was not good enough to make it in Europe.

Chelsea actually won it, Fulham was ranked highest of teams not already ready in Europe and won the bonus Europa League spot.

Chelsea finished 10th this year so they did not have much of a chance to repeat. Stoke City fiinished last this season.

If fair play determined relegation then Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Stoke City would go down.
