Funny. That reminds me of that rumor that was going around after Sheikh Mansour bought City that he thought he was actually buying Manchester United. Does anybody know if there was any merit to that rumor?

But there couldn't be any truth, no way would you go through all those negotiations thinking it's United, at some point the fact it's City would have been brought up

I think the issue (as the rumor goes, anyway) was that the Sheikh didn't know the difference between City and United. He intended to buy the team with more prestige and history as opposed to the blue collar team on the poorer side of town. I heard many of his family members were pissed at him for buying City instead of United.

Probably not. United would have cost him over a £1bn, while city was just £200M. Makes sense that he would buy City for £200M and rather invest the difference into the squad and club structure. Cheaper, and just as effective.

Probably not. I don't think there's any truth to the rumor but I wouldn't be that shocked if it was true. I've been doing business in the Middle East for about 5 years now and I've seen many filthy rich sheikhs make absolutely ludicrous lavished investments without doing proper due diligence. A lot of them make deals for the sake of showing off and they do things on a whim.

I think buying City is more high profile too, because if United got further success he'd be just walking down an already quite battered path. Taking City from where we were to where we are now has been ridiculous and he's ridden the hype, if that makes sense.

IIRC he looked at a few clubs, but we fit the bill better in terms of the base for building on (stadium etc.). It wouldn't surprise me if having United as city rivals helped too, establishing a Milan type rivalry is good for the profile.
