"It really was a goose-bumps moment," said Frank de Boer after AFC Ajax secured their second consecutive Eredivisie title following a routine 2-0 victory against VVV-Venlo.

Ajax celebrate on the Amsterdam ArenA pitch

Following seven years in the wilderness, AFC Ajax are on their way to re-establishing themselves as Dutch football's most eminent club after recording back-to-back Eredivisie titles for the first time since 1996.

The Amsterdam giants came into the match with a six-point lead over their closest pursuers, Feyenoord, and needing a point against VVV-Venlo to clinch the championship. Siem de Jong capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to open the scoring from close range before settling the match – and the title race – on 58 minutes as delirium ensued inside the Amsterdam ArenA.

"I am extremely happy with winning the championship," said Theo Janssen, who joined from FC Twente last summer. "We had a volatile and very strange start to the season, but the second half was good and has delivered the title to us."

Captain Jan Vertonghen echoed his team-mate's sentiments. "The title is deserved," he said. "We have proven we can score goals and also defend a lead."

For coach Frank de Boer it is his second league triumph since replacing Martin Jol in December 2010. "I'm extremely satisfied with how we played. Everyone was dealing with it in the right way. It really was a goose-bumps moment.

"For me, the previous title was unforgettable because people were longing for it so much. But for the staff, this championship might be even more beautiful."

With one game to go Ajax are 22-7-4 with 90 goals for and 35 goals against.

Congrats! clap I remember them struggling in the table when we played them in the Europa League so it's nice to see them win it. Ajax not worthy

I think they won like 15 games in a row at the end which seems to be crazy.

13 league victories in a row, just 12 in a row overall though due to the home defeat against Manchester United, the turning point of the season Wink

I disagree with Frank De Boer on the views of the last championship being better than this one, the way this one was won, with the situation at the top was amazing, Ajax looked completely out of it after 1 point in 3 matches after the winter break, not being in a good position to begin with, but stringing together 13 victories was even more impressive.
Last year PSV and Twente had to slip up against "lower" teams, this year it was due to the top teams beating each other while Ajax just beat them, on the way Ajax beat PSV H (2-0), Heerenveen A(0-5) & Fc Twente A(1-2).

Of course it didn't end up being in the last game which was something really special last year but the championship was really secured on Sunday against FC Twente(again) which was an exciting match. The match against VVV-Venlo was just a warm up to the grand finale, receiving the Schaal (Trophy) in front of 52.000 fans. I was told 3 hours before the match there was a ticket, but there were no plane tickets at all so was too late :'(

Also check out the ArenA in the dark, can ignore the slightly cheesy song.

Check in with the Eredivise thread ofc, posting about the league and lots of Ajax

Despite the slow start, there's no doubt that Ajax have been a step above the opposition this year. Well deserved.

Yes I think in your situation getting out of Europe was actually a good thing and losing to a serious rival probably motivated the players more. For you I hope you guys can draw FC Copenhagen in the champions league or someone from Denmark since they get two entries.

Yeah that would be something, and with Christian Eriksen & the rest of the Danes(3 for sure, possibly 4/5(Fischer)) at Ajax that would easily sell out in Copenhagen and if FC Nordsjælland win the league and get in it will be odd for CL to be in a 9500 seater stadium (at least they are comfy seats). Although i am not sure if we can draw Copenhagen, fairly close in the UEFA Coefficients as i recall, but Nordsjælland should be a sure pot 4 team, should they win the league.
Even if it would be hard to get seats for either possible game in Denmark i can always get seats in Amsterdam now, but its all at a wishful thinking stage right now Ajax sink Venlo to seal 31st Eredivisie title 78475

And the UEFA thing definitely played in AZ was in the lead, but them having to play more rounds of EL than the rest of the teams probably did hurt them a bit more than they thought, specially the schooling they got by Valencia must have been a reality check. It was also the right way to go out for Ajax, with a positive performance specially considering what had happened in the league before that
