Winning Cup competitions is much more to do with luck - not so much luck as in getting lucky bounces of the ball or the referee's decisions, but luck in the sense of your side clicking on a particular day, the opposition having a bad day, or whatever. The last 3 trophies they've won, they could easily have lost if the penalties had gone a different way, the one before that, if United had shown up on that day, if Beckham hadn't scored an OG, they would have lost that as well, the time before that, they were playing an awful side who scored a Golden Own Goal for them in a 5-4, the time before that Hyypia (or was it Henchoz) handled on the line and got away with it, Birmingham should have beaten them in the previous final, and so on.
If a side is of a top 4 standard and has a lot of luck going for it, it can win a lot of trophies. It's much much harder for luck to have an effect on a League title though, because there are so many games, it doesn't come down to one off matches, and their quality is so far off the top that luck can't really effect it. In the year when they were close enough that a bit of luck could have seen them over the line, 2009, they didn't get it, every other year it wouldn't have mattered.
