In the Sound dialog box, click the Recording tab.
Click Microphone, and then click Properties.
Note Make sure that Working appears under Microphone. If Working does not appear, click Microphone, and then click Set Default.
In the Microphone Properties dialog box, click the Custom tab.
Select or clear the Microphone Boost check box.
Click the Levels tab.
Adjust the volume slider to the level that you want, and then click OK.
Click OK to close the Sound dialog box.

Did most of that (I couldn't find the Custom tab) and it still isn't working. Will try uninstalling and installing again although I'm not very optimistic at this point. Thanks for the help though, much appreciated.

Had the same problem. After a windows update sometimes the computer/laptop might turn off (or in my case un-install) the driver of the webcam etc.
To check if this has happened and to turn them on again click start and type in device manager. Check if anything is gone/missing.
