What is the correct usage? Arsenal is the greatest or Arsenal are the greatest?
Arsenal is just an example as it was what started the argument but any club can be used.

Came into the thread to post something pretty similar to this.Laurencio wrote:Depends if you're talking about the club or the team I imagine.
Arsenal (it) is a great club.
Arsenal (they) are really good

See I hate foreign cunts like you.ahlycotc wrote:The correct usage is "is" because you are referring to one entity.
Arsenal is just short for Arsenal Football Club. You wouldn't say "the club are the best".

No, he is talking about the team on the pitch (I assume). So the subject would be "they", and the correct term is "were", as it's "they were the greatest", and not "it was the greatest".
Barton wrote:Think 'are' is the correct word to use there, not sure if 'is' makes grammatical sense in that sentance. It's just one of those things, a bit like when people say 'would of' when it should be 'would have'.

If he was talking about the team, then fine. But if he was referring to the club, it would be "was".

Yeah, so annoying. Like when people spell sentence like sentance.
