Cardiff v Crystal Palace | League Cup Semi Final Second Leg Empty Cardiff v Crystal Palace | League Cup Semi Final Second Leg

    Post by Scouser_Dave Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:23 pm

Venue: Selhurst Park Date: Tuesday, 10 January Kick-off: 2000 GMT Coverage: Watch live on Sky Sports 1 and highlights on The League Cup Show; listen on

BBC Radio 5 live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website
Palace manager Dougie Freedman is looking to lead the club to their first major cup final since 1990

    TEAM NEWS

Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman hopes to recall several regulars rested in the FA Cup defeat at Derby.

However, a sickness bug that has affected several unnamed players has delayed the naming of his squad.

Cardiff defender Kevin Naughton has been declared fit, having missed the last three matches with a calf strain.

Midfielder Craig Conway could again be included after playing in the FA Cup at West Bromwich Albion, but Rudy Gestede is a doubt with an ankle problem.

    MATCH PREVIEW

The first leg of this all-Championship League Cup semi-final has been eagerly awaited by both clubs in the six weeks since they overcame Premier League opposition to reach the last four.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Crystal Palace are featuring in their fourth League Cup semi-final but are yet to reach the final.
Crystal Palace famously triumphed 2-1 at Manchester United in the quarter-finals to give their supporters one of their best nights in recent years, while Cardiff overcame Blackburn 2-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Six of that Blackburn side then went on to beat 3-2 Manchester United in the Premier League on New Year's Eve.

Both managers, Dougie Freedman at Palace and Cardiff's Malky Mackay, arguably sacrificed potential FA Cup runs with this match in mind. There were a combined 17 changes to the respective starting line-ups for the FA Cup defeats at Derby and West Bromwich Albion, although, in Palace's case, a sickness bug resulted in several younger players being drafted in.

Freedman starred in many a big match for Palace during a decade-long stay as a player, over two spells, and he will now be looking to inspire the club from the dug-out. Mackay has settled into the Cardiff hot-seat seamlessly after his summer switch from Watford. The club boast the second best home record in the Championship, so a positive result for the Bluebirds in south east London will put the Welsh club in the box seat ahead of the second leg in a fortnight.

Whatever the outcome over the two matches, this tie guarantees that a club from outside the top flight will be in the final for the first time since Birmingham City lost to Liverpool at Cardiff in 2001.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

Palace have never lost to Cardiff in three previous League Cup matches, winning two and drawing the other.
Cardiff have won on two of their last three trips to Selhurst Park.
The two clubs will meet again at Selhurst Park on the final day of the Championship season.
    Crystal Palace

Palace have lost their three previous League Cup semi-finals. They were eliminated by Arsenal in 1992-93 and Liverpool in both 1994-95 and 2000-01.
The Eagles have scored two goals in each of their last seven home League Cup ties.
Palace have lost only once at Selhurst Park in this competition in six years: a 2-0 second-round defeat by Manchester City in August 2009.
Dougie Freedman's side have won only one of their last six league matches at Selhurst Park.
    Cardiff

This is Cardiff's second appearance in the last four of the League Cup. They were beaten 10-3 on aggregate by West Ham at the semi-final stage in 1965-66.
Malky Mackay's men have not conceded in either of their last two League Cup matches.
The Bluebirds have lost four of their last six away League Cup encounters.
Cardiff have lost only one of 13 league games.

Hopefully Cardiff win, and then lose in the final so I can take the piss out of a few mates who did the same thing to me last year with Arsenal...

Yep, and bottlers of the big occasions. Would have still expected them to walk it against Birmingham though.

    Cardiff v Crystal Palace (agg 0 - 1)

    Carling Cup semi-final, second leg

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium Date: Tuesday, 24 January Kick-off: 1945 GMT Coverage: Watch live on BBC 2; listen on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website

Anthony Gardner's first leg goal has given Palace the narrowest of advantages

    TEAM NEWS

Cardiff report no new injury problems following their 3-2 league win over Portsmouth at the weekend.

Right-back Kevin McNaughton (calf) and striker Rudy Gestede (ankle) are Malky Mackay's only doubts.

Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman looks set to reinstate a host of first-team players after resting them for the league defeat at Blackpool.

The Eagles are boosted by the return of Dean Moxey and Alex Marrow from injury, while Sean Scannell is back from a ban.

    MATCH PREVIEW

Crystal Palace may hold a goal advantage from the first leg, but if that match at Selhurst Park has taught us anything, it's that there is little to choose between these two Championship clubs.

In Malky Mackay and Dougie Freedman, they both have intelligent, enthusiastic and impressive up-and-coming Scottish managers. Neither may have graced a major final as a player before, but one of them will be prowling the Wembley touchline next month in the opposite dug-out to either of the highly-decorated Kenny Dalglish or Roberto Mancini.

Cardiff are looking to secure a third visit to the new Wembley Stadium in five years. Their previous two trips, under the management of former boss Dave Jones, both ended in defeat. They lost the 2008 FA Cup final 1-0 to Portsmouth, the second at the refurbished venue, and were beaten 3-2 by Blackpool in the 2009/10 Championship Play-Off final. Will they return in a third different competition just seven months into Malky Mackay's tenure as boss?

Crystal Palace are on what captain Paddy McCarthy calls "a fantastic journey" after nearly going out of business a little over 18 months ago. He is one of several players still at the club who were not getting paid when Palace slipped into administration for the second time in 11 years. The Eagles were eventually saved by a consortium of four supporters (CP2010), headed by co-chairmen Steve Parrish and Martin Long.

Since then the club have gone from strength-to-strength and the unity and stability on show from boardroom level, right through to the fans, is arguably its biggest weapon. There's a momentum and a steely determination about the 2011-12 Eagles, who finally look to be assigning recent troubled times to the history books.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

Crystal Palace have never lost to Cardiff in six previous cup competitions, winning all five home matches and drawing their only away encounter.
Palace are yet to win on three previous visits to the Cardiff City Stadium (D2, L1), that defeat came last November as Kenny Miller and Peter Whittingham both scored in a 2-0 Bluebirds' win in the Championship.

Miller's strike that day ended Crystal Palace's new club record run of 619 minutes (10-and-a-half-hours) without conceding a goal.
    Cardiff City

Cardiff have qualified for the semi-finals of the Leage Cup for only the second time in their history, they were beaten 10-3 on aggregate by West Ham during the 1965/66 season.

The Bluebirds have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 League Cup matches on home soil.
Cardiff have only failed to score in four of 34 matches in all competitions this term; three times in the Championship and the first-leg defeat to Palace.
    Crystal Palace

This is the Eagles' fourth appearance in the last four of the League Cup and their first in 11 seasons.

Palace lost 5-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in 1993, 2-0 on aggregate to Liverpool in 1995 and 6-2 over two-legs to Liverpool in 2001; blowing a 2-1 first leg lead in the process.

The Eagles have won all six Carling Cup matches this season, and have not lost in eight, since the 2-0 reverse to Manchester City in the second round in August 2009.

Dougie Freedman's side have conceded just three goals in their six League Cup matches this season and scored twice in every round, bar their 1-0 semi-final first leg victory.
