Chris Benoit: A Victim? Empty Chris Benoit: A Victim?

    Post by Jamie14 Tue Jan 03, 2012 10:29 am

Since my previous thread 'WWE or Eastenders?' I have been discussing many aspects of WWE with people as I struggle to get my head around why anyone who is not brain-dead would watch it. Whilst you may think it is, this thread is not an attack on WWE, anyone who watches it or indeed Chris Benoit himself. I am not poking fun, I am simply curious.

I assume most if not all of you will be aware of the tragic events that surround the death of former WWE performer Chris Benoit - if not, in short, he killed his wife and seven year old son before taking his own life in June 2007. There was much controversy and discussion surrounding his death, and questions began to rise regarding motives for the murder-suicide.

Many ideas were thrown into the ring, including brain damage from blows to the head which was ruled out by WWE itself as 'speculative', and more interestingly mental health issues as a result of steroid abuse. What is evident here is that Benoit's job as a performer for WWE certainly impacted him greatly, and is possibly somewhat at fault for his deterioration.

However, one thing which I find most odd is the appearance on Wikipedia of a statement regarding the death of Nancy Benoit's death (Chris' wife), which surfaced over 14 hours before the police found her body at her home. The police investigated the source of the statement and traced the IP Address to Stamford, Conneticut, which also just so happens to be the location of the WWE Headquarters. Coincidence?. The police closed the case stating that the leak of information was nothing more than that, but this surely cannot be the case.

So I would like to hear your view on the topic - were WWE behind the demise of Chris Benoit; was he a victim? Or are people simply reading too much into his tragic death?

WWE obviously didn't murder him if that's what's being suggested. They did a tribute show to him after he died before it was clear that he'd murdered his family before offing himself, and since then they've tried to erase him from their history.

So you think if they did plan and execute his murder then they wouldn't make it look like they knew nothing about it? think

One could say the tribute show was to simply trick the viewers and the general public into thinking that they had nothing to do with his death.

Surely the supposed death of a performer to them would be a huge source of publicity? And from what I gather there was little negative publicity..

Find me the viewing figures for the time Benoit died - they can't have gone down after his death was announced, that's for sure.

And if you were to say that the death of a wrestler would jeopardise the industry then that's complete horseshit too.

Doesnt jeopardise it.. but its only gonna be bad for it when someone associated with the company dies in the way Benoit did..

Ive no way of finding the viewing figures around that time.. but yeah Im sure his tribute show was watched by alot more than usual.. but I doubt those people stuck around for the weeks after.

Which is why WWE then distanced themselves from him: draw in the viewers and after the initial show don't ever mention the bad guy again. Chances are some viewers will have stuck around, too.

Who's to say that his family arent the ones who wanted them not to mention him after the tribute show?

If i recall correctly WWE had a tribute show for Benoit without even knowing the circumstances and events surrounding his death. After learning that he murdered his wife and son before committing suicide, that's when the WWE decided to distance themselves from him, which is understandable.

Not at all, it is just something I wanted people's opinions on.

This is what RR suggested, yes, and it is understandable.

Talked about this with some wrestling fanatic I know.

Wrestling and steroids might have affected him but....that's his choice. If he's a victim, he's a victim of himself. Kill yourself if you're that messed up....but not your family...find it very hard to have sympathy for anyone who does something like that.
