BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Barcelona is charging fans an entrance fee to watch an upcoming open training session as part of a drive by the European champions to boost revenues.

Club members can invite three guests free of charge for the Jan. 5 training at Mini Stadium, next to Camp Nou, but nonmembers will be charged ?5 ($6.45) to watch Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta hone their skills.

Under current president Sandro Rosell, the heavily indebted club has looked to cut costs and used unprecedented means to boost revenue. Barcelona owes ?369 million ($499 million) and lost ?9 million ($12.7 million) last season despite winning the Champions League and Spanish league titles.

Barcelona said the club has often charged for access to open training sessions, including under former president Joan Laporta’s board, and that the fee was necessary for security reasons.

The recent Club World Cup winners signed a ?171 million ($230 million) deal with Qatar Foundation, which became the first paid sponsor to adorn the club’s jersey in its 112-year history.

Barcelona scrapped its 80-year-old baseball team and slashed funding to 12 small sports teams earlier this year.

While Real Madrid’s debt is comparable to Barcelona’s, it did not charge fans to attend an open training session at its Santiago Bernabeu stadium in August, when 57,000 spectators watched for free.

Well I guess this is part of the real worldwide economic downturn but I never knew they played baseball in Spain. Although if I would ever consider to pay to watch training for these guys. Forgive the writer for not knowing the proper key for the Euro as it hard to remember the proper code since it is not actually on the keyboard.

Barcelona fund a team for pretty much all sports, they have like the Barcelona rugby team and basketball and everything. Quite cool if you ask me.

It is quite cruel to cut the baseball team when they just won the league (33-3) for the first time this year since 1958! These minority sport teams are nice to have to be diverse but they added up made $63.5 million loss last year. I beleive everything other than football and basketball are considered minority sports.

There is no money in European baseball, softball is played a bit more but its truly a minority sport. Paying for the open training. I think Ajax had something similar at some point, like for a special access where you could get photo's and autographs when the team didn't take 7 years between championships.

Barcelona's handball team is one of Europes best and does actually make money even if the sport really only has traction in North Germany, Scandinavia and a few east European countries. Spain and France national team in the sport are both some of the best but they are lucky if they get even a notation in one of the bigger newspapers even if they are World, Olympic and European champions(France).
