I was listening to The Game Podcast this morning and Patrick Barclay brought up an interesting point. He was talking about Luis Suarez, and how is the worst cheat he has ever seen. He performs studs up tackles on opposition defenders, gets them sent off for fine tackles, abuses the linesmen, racially abuses opponents, constantly pesters referees, bites opponents, pulls opponents hair, cheats African countries out of the World Cup etc., and that's just what we know about. Now obviously Kenneth Dalglish encourages this sort of thing, Suarez would never get away with it at a club like Manchester United, who have a more honourable club culture, and a manager who has forced players to stop diving in the past, but we already knew all that, we knew that that shower of bastards have no honour, dignity or sportsmanship.
The point that Barclay brought up that I found interesting was that Suarez would be nowhere near as good if he didn't do all of these things. Suarez is very good at beating players, in more ways than one, but how much of that is down to them losing concentration because of all of Suarez's shenanigans? How much of it is down to being terrified of tackling him because they know he will try to get them sent off, especially if they are black, and giving him more space as a result? How much of it is down to the players actually being sent off?
I'm not saying Kenneth wouldn't pick this guy if he was a true sportsman, I'm just posing the question, I think it's worth considering - what do you guys think?
