Briton Dan Wheldon has been seriously hurt in a 15-car accident at the Las Vegas Indy 300.

Buckinghamshire-born Wheldon, 33, who won the series in 2005, was taken to the nearby University Medical Center.

Fellow driver James Hinchcliffe said: "Everyone's thoughts are with Dan right now. I can't describe the scene on the track at the time.

"It's a whole new dimension, knowing Dan flew out of here in a helicopter."

The crash coming out of turn two on the 12th lap had left Townsend Bell's car upside down.

Leeds-born James Jakes added: "There was a lot of moving around, people were moving around not holding their line and I saw a car hit outside of turn two."

Drivers Pippa Mann, JR Hildebrand and Will Power were also taken to hospital.

The crash ended Australian Power's bid to overtake Dario Franchitti and claim the series title.

Scot Franchitti secured his third straight series crown and fourth overall after Power was ruled out.

Wheldon, who had been unable to secure a full-time seat, started from the back of the field in pursuit of a $5m (£3.1m) prize offered by IndyCar to a non-series driver who could win the series finale.

There's a HQ version of the video in the chat thread. Scary stuff though.

You need to consider the speeds they are going out.....over 200MPH. There isn't much, if any, time to avoid these accidents. The accident looked to start because one car skidded.

Really, it's got to be a lot easier to crash when you are flat out almost all the time and there are loads of cars around you. On an F1 track there is a lot more braking and you're not very close to other racers most of the time.

If anything its harder to crash when compared to F1, the tracks are easily more than twice as wide, + there's no braking or gear-shifts to worry about when going into a corner as there isn't any whereas in Indy you go to top gear and stay there for a few hours (with the odd exception). An F1 car at certain tracks will easily average over 200mph, Hakkinen was averaging 250 at Monza a few year backs iirc.

Also didn't realise that a driver died R.I.P Dan Wheldon

This is why I don't like this sport. Besides the fact it's just going around in circles all the time, it's a very dangerous sport.
