    South American U20 Championships: Peru 2011 Blog_2212_35412224820624

This tournament begins on the 16th anf serves as qualifiers both for the 2011 U20 World Cup and the 2012 Olympic Games. The first part of a group stage with two groups of five. The top three teams qualify, while the bottom two are eliminated. The teams who qualify first go straight to the final while the other four play off for two qualification spots. If Colombia make it to the final six, but aren't in the final, the team they play will qualify automatically. That's because the 2011 U20 World Cup is in Colombia. The groups:

Group A: Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
Group B: Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia,Bolivia

    Schedule

All time should be EST in that link, so just add 5 for GMT.

If it's on tv, i'll probably watch it.

Might help attract attention to the Eurofags if you post the games and the schedule. (including time)

A good first half with Ecuador leading at the break. The difference has come down to the team with the better wingers. Both sides are playing 4-2-2-2. The two pairs of deep-lying midfielders makes wingplay the best way to achieive anything. Ecuador was better at it.

What Ecuador has is real pace in the form of Caicedo on the left. Cross-field switches from Cazares to Caiceo produced the 2 best chances. Colombia's wingers on the other hand lack that extra bit of pace. Plus, the Ecuadorian wingers are tracking back to double-team them.

There are two broken teams on the field, with both front fours responsible for the bulk of the attack. The fullbacks barely get forward.

So the match finished 1x1. Some thoughts.

Colombia utterly dominated the 2nd half. Credit to the coach for pushing up the fullbacks and giving Ecuador something to worry about. Unfortunately for them, they were too individualistic. With that lack of cohesion, they relied on their best individual to come up with something. Escobar on the left wing was the go-to guy, and he won the penalty that proved to be the equalizer. Cardona had an average game. His effectiveness was severely limited by the Ecuadorian Great Wall.

Ecuador on the other hand look to possess the cohesiveness that Colombia lack. If only they utilized their fullbacks. At times the crisp one-touch passing between the front four was sublime. Colombia were opened up easily in these moments. Cazares played well in the 2st half in linking up with Caicedo on the opposite wing. He was invisible in the second.

It was two playmakers who carried all the hype into this game, but it will be two left wingers who come out smelling like roses. Take a bow, Andre 'Manga' Escobar (COL) and Caicedo (ECU).

    Brazil x Paraguay up next.
