Ahly grab first CAF Cup title in dramatic fashion

Ahli clinched the CAF Confederation Cup title for the first time ever after beating Sewe Sport 1-0, thanks to a last-gasp winner by Emad Meteb.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the Egyptian champions were frustrated by their Ivorian visitors until the last minute of injury time.

With merely seconds remaining, Egypt striker Meteb converted a Walid Soliman cross to give the Reds a dramatic victory.

Ahli, who are the record holders of the Champions League, add the Confederation Cup title to their trophy cabinet as the first Egyptian club to win it.

When will they ever catch up with all the  Egyptian Premier League matches they have missed?  They have played roughly half the amount of games as anyone else.  The team will face some horrible fixture congestion soon.

We have 4-5 games in hand in the league, so yeah we will have to play catch up. But like Vela said, we've dealt with worse. We've suffered from fixture congestion for the past few years.

by "dealing with worse" i meant things worse than fixture congestion, like playing in minefields or having players shot

Well they we haven't dealt with any of that. It's our fans that get shot at, not the players.

Ahly can't afford good players so sometimes they get fans to play for them iirc, so yea, players have been shot at

Where does this cup fall in the hierarchy? I know they have a Champions League in Africa and a competition only for third world clubs but this doesn't seem to be either of them. Is it an African equivalent of the Europa League or something?

This is the equivalent of the Europa League. You either win a domestic cup or finish 3rd in the league to qualify. Ahly qualified because they got knocked out in 2nd round of the Champions League.

Yeah, Ahly use of "grabbed 1st title" makes it sound like Al Ahly were trying for years to win this elusive competition.
