    AMSTERDAM (AP) -- A man who was working as a linesman during a youth soccer match in the Netherlands has died after being beaten and kicked by several players.

    Richard Nieuwenhuizen collapsed and was rushed to the hospital hours after players from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten punched and kicked him. Nieuwenhuizen's club, Buitenboys, announced the death Monday but not the exact cause.

    Three players, whose ages range from 15 to 16, were arrested earlier Monday for alleged involvement in the beating.

    Dutch sports minister Edith Schippers told national broadcaster NOS even before the news of Nieuwenhuizen's death that ''it is absolutely terrible that something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field.''

    Police spokeswoman Leonie Bosselaar said shortly before the linesman's death was announced that the players were still in custody.

    When i first read the article headline earlier today i did not expect it to be in Netherlands.

    But thinking about it, might as well have been here, incidents of knife and gun threats to amateur refs are not that uncommon, especially in certain areas which are similar to the area where this club is from.

    Shocking story still, sorry to read about it.

    At a local game a few years back people had went to a £1 store and bought cheap glasses for £50, this is the best way to heckle a linesman that i've heard about, killing them is not in the top 10.000 of ways to heckle them.

    I'm not even sure what i was doing writing here at 4:52 in the morning.

    Carefully explained it seems like it was about expressing your dislike for the linesman without it involving death. A group of fans had bought 50 pairs of glasses and threw them down to the linesman at the local club that had a bad reputation for shakey calls (in the 7th or 8th tier of football here). Glasses because of the notion that he might not be able to see. I am not entirely sure why i was writing this here or 4:52 in the morning.
