I am good with in depth analysis discussions, but talking tactics is rather hard on this really. I'd need a white board and a makrer really. And I need to speak in face to get my point across to someone. Good thread aswell.

4-5-1 formation, play your players out of position as possibly as you can, play a big man up front, pass ball to defender, either boot long to striker or pass back to GK to boot long to striker.

If eiher Torres or N'Gog are out, who plays? Does Liverpool have any other strikers?

    Tactics Thread BN2Zh

Why just not use Torres and N'Gog sub, while adding an extra man to the midfield? So obvious a 5 year old can do it.

Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel are also strikers. Milan Jovanovic is also no stranger to that position.

Jovanovic is better on the Wing from what I remember in Belgium.

Babel is Babel. Plus isn't he naturally a winger or an attacking midfielder of some sort anyway?

And Pacheco isn't good enough yet.

Only vaguely remember Eccleston but I'd imagine him and Pacheco are better off going on loan.

Post by Sean Fri Dec 10, 2010 5:02 am

    A little thing I wrote

    Possession: a luxury or necessity?

In the modern game, it seems achievements are measured in possession stats. Barcelona may have just beaten their opponents 6-0 but more importantly those experts on all things football go to length to show you Barca had 60% away from home. Arsenal may have conceded a 94th minute equaliser, but no matter they kept the ball significantly longer than their opponents. However is this dominance on the ball as proportionate to success as were once the case?

The obvious figure in this argument is that of Jose Mourinho. 28th April 2010 The Special One takes his Inter squad to the Nou Camp protecting a 3-1 lead from the first leg, and the Italians produce a defensive masterclass to progress, despite a 1-0 lead. However this only tells part of the story

One look at the match stats presents an interesting view of Inter's tactics for this match. Barcelona had a massive 76% possession compared to Inter. Now this is Inter Milan, a team who went on to win the treble giving up such a majority of time on the ball, not some newly promoted canon fodder for Barcalona's hitmen.

However Jose's masterplan was soon revealed, it emerged that this concession of possession was in order for Inter Milan to keep their defensive shape and that players purposefully gave away the ball for this purpose. This is just one example of the metamorphosis modern football has recently underwent

It is not just Jose with his parked bus, plane and whatever else is in the garage who favours a more defensive view on the game. Many teams forgoe possession of the ball for defensive solidaty, the recent World Cup highlighted a trend where what teams done off the ball mattered equally if not more than what they done on the ball. The recent trend of having two holding midfielders may on one side assist in keeping the ball, but in reality these players are utilised to get the ball back from opponents rather than safeguard the ball once they receive it.

Not to run Barcalona examples into the ground but they are a team who while worshipped for their ability to keep the ball, owe just as much success to what they do without the ball. Barca are masters of pressure (not a Metallica cover song). Every player assists on harrying and hurrying opposition players into losing the ball, and the high line they play is seems as worth the risk, highlighting the emphasis they put on this

In conclusion, while possession is no doubt important and relative to the success of teams,it appears probable that it is not as influential as Andy Gray and Sky's gadgets would lead you to believe.

I think that's spot on. You see some examples of that in the PL as well

For instance Mikel plays as a Brazillian DM. Chelsea's full backs always bomb forward and it's up to Mikel to cover the gaps

Song also plays somewhat as a Spanish DM he plays much farther up the field than your normal DM, and gets involved in the action

I would agree with you based on last season, though Song maybe doesn't have the range of passing. Based on this season, Song is somewhat of a hybrid between a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player. He still is required to provide defensive cover, but he is also responsible for making discrete runs into the box, something that is not usually in a DM's role.
