This was always a turbulent environment to navigate; I haven't seen to many films equating the British Empire to Nazi Germany. Maybe just the Patriot.

That's just how it goes, patriotism always forces through independence, even when it's not required. My country used to be a British colony, and it's a shame that ended, because what followed was a civil war, just like in the US.
