The 2011–12 FAW Welsh Cup will be the 125th season of the annual knockout tournament for competitive football teams in Wales. The 2011–12 tournament will commence on August 13, 2011, and will run until the final in May 2012. The winner of the Cup will qualify to the first qualifying round[1] of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League.. The 2011–12 Welsh Cup sees the return of Western League side Merthyr Town and Conference National sides Newport County and Wrexham. Football League side Cardiff City, Conference North side Colwyn Bay and Premier League side Swansea City rejected the invitation to participate in this season's Welsh Cup.
I feel that it is really huge news that Welsh teams playing in the English system were invited to take part in the Welsh Cup. I assume Cardiff and Swansea rejected the invite to avoid any additional fixture congestion and issues about how they could qualify for European competitions.
How did the teams that accepted the invite do? None are still in the competition.
Merthyr Town lost Round 1
Wrexham lost Round 3 (Round of 32)
Newport County lost Round 4 (Round of 16)
Now for the rest of the tournament here are the quarterfinals
Aberystwyth Town v Cefn Druids
Airbus UK Broughton v Carmarthen Town
Bala Town v Llanelli
The New Saints of Oswestry Town & Llansantffraid v Neath
