Re: Book Thread
Depressing, tragic novels are painful in the tedious sense to read, unless the characters and plot are so well imagined that impending doom just adds to the layers of intricacy and emotionality. Take Lord of the Rings and its ill-fated chief protagonist, Gollum as a demonstration.

Yea, but I think me and you have a fundamental difference of opinion on what makes a good novel. You seem to be more plot orientated, how the action progress, while I'm more character orientated. I guess you see the book as how the character impacts on the plot while I see it as how the plot impacts on the character.

Is anyone interested in how the novel is written? The faculty of language used?

Technique? It massively affects my confidence in the novel and being an aspiring writer I tend look out for bits I can pick up on to improve my own.

Re: Book Thread
Yea Rolo, technique is important to me I guess, my favourite style I guess would be first person narration and a sort of stream of conciousness, and when I write my own stuff that's the style I use mostly.

Re: Book Thread
I don't really like first person narrator, I prefer an omniscient third person narrator.

I just like to get a good grasp on the character, how he's feeling, what he's thinking. Keeps me more connected I guess.

I recently read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
The main character was an ass but first person narration makes it easier for you to sympathize with him...

Why bother when Apocalypse Now is superior?

No, to be honest, but... don't compare a book to a movie, however similar in idea they may be.

You undermine films, my friend. I hear they're quite different anyway. They're not even set in the same war-zone.

Well, obviously.
One's set in Vietnam while the other is set in the Belgian Congo at the end of the 19th century.
I didn't say films were bad, but just that you can't compare a book to a movie, they are different.

Yes, I know. Thanks for the explanation... I understand they are different, it was just an innocuous joke in favour of my preferred medium. You can still compare them though.

Hah, nice.
That previous post seemed like a blend of a few of those.
