It's nothing to do with "a lot of people" it's a joke between scouser's. When we were both having the success we had in the 80's and meeting in cup final's you didn't have Liverpool coaches and Everton coaches travelling down to Wembley, You had Merseyside coaches. Both sets of fans use to travel together, You've seen Merseyside derby games and how you get each set of fans in all ends of the ground there use to be a lot more compared to the very little there is today. The bitterness has grown and us fans have grown apart since there has only been one club bringing trophies back to Merseyside.
You should be getting a lot closer together then.
And besides, that's the point isn't it? When we were both having success, United and Liverpool, in the early 2000s, there wasn't as much bitterness, but in the last 5 years, when there's only been one club bringing the trophies back to the North West and back to England, the bitterness on your part has grown and both sets of fans have grown apart.
