STEVEN GERRARD believes Liverpool FC have made the right moves in the transfer market this summer – and expects further new arrivals before the window closes at the end of the month.

Anfield will have its first glimpse of the recruitment drive this evening when Kenny Dalglish’s side host Spanish outfit Valencia in a showpiece friendly.

Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam are all expected to be given extended run-outs in Liverpool’s final pre-season fixture, while backup goalkeeper Alexander Doni could also see some action.

And Gerrard is glad of the competition for places he hopes will increase further in the next four weeks.

“I believe we've made some very good signings this summer, with Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Doni all coming in,” said the Liverpool skipper.

“Hopefully there will be one or two more arriving before the transfer window closes.

“You always want competition for places because it's a long season. Obviously it gives the manager more options and it also pushes the players on because they know not everyone can start every game.”

Gerrard also expects the strike partnership of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez to blossom this season after injury and ineligibility meant the pair started together only five times since their arrivals in January.

“It also still feels like Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez are new signings, even though they've been with us since January,” said the 31-year-old.

“They both did well in the second half of last season. That experience should help them to perform even better in 2011-12.”

Gerrard will be absent this evening as he regains his fitness following a groin infection that will sideline him until September.

Liverpool manager Dalglish is expected to name a strong side, with Lucas Leiva, who returned to training on Monday after appearing in the Copa America with Brazil, a possible inclusion on the bench.

Meanwhile, Academy starlet Michael Ngoo came off the bench for England against Mexico as they secured a third successive goalless draw in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Mexico.

He shouldn't be saying that, but hopefully it is true.

Should be a strong line-up, not sure if it'll be 100% first choice for them but most likely close it.

Can you get tickets at Anfield today Dean? I wonder if I should go. Need to kill 4 hours and driving up there would take a chunk of that out.

Cheers Jamie. I'm more looking forward to going and watching Valencia if I'm totally honest. Laughing We'll have to be on our game today, or we'll get well beaten, good side Valencia. Anyone see Everton get mauled by Villareal last night? Laughing One of the lads in work is an Evertonian and was saying yesterday that Everton had a much better side then Villareal. facepalm

I'm hoping to see a better tempo to the game today, it has felt as if the season has been ages away for a while and suddenly it seems dead close, hopefully it'll give the players a kick up the arse and get them into gear.

@Grenade- Maybe not score wise, but they basically got passed off the pitch, Everton were chasing shadows all game. Do agree with you about Ross Barkley, fantastic prospect.

@Jay- Yeah, it has to be basically has to be full tempo today, competitive match pace. We should be playing today how we're gunna' look to play against Sunderland. It'll be interesting to see the team too.

    Anyway I'm off. 2-2.

We are currently the highest bidders (in excess of £10m) for Southampton's Alex Oxlade Chamberlain. Arsenal have bid £10m and the player prefers a move there but Arsenal are reluctant to match our bid until Nasri is sold to Man City (who has personal terms agreed).

We have placed a deadline on our bid and the player now has a decision to make.

(mods happy to disclose my source to you if required).

On some Liverpool site. Been there a week and they haven't deleted it. shifty

Not sure, don't think we'll lose but can't decide between draw and win.

    Depends on the line-ups...
