Re: Best Keeper at Saving Penalties?
No, he only ever saved one from van Nistelrooy. van Nistelrooy took two other penalties against him, he hit the bar with one and scored the other.Jordi wrote:Didn't Lehmann always manage to save RVN's penalties?kyro7 wrote:I was thinking of saying him, then I thought it might just be in my mind..ResurrectionRooney wrote:Almunia has a superb record on penalties doesn't he? After the West Brom game I heard he'd saved 5 of the last 6 he'd faced at the Emirates.
Lehman was pretty good and he's back in the league.

Foster is fucking shite on penalties. He saved one in the Carling Cup Final and conceded at least the next 9 that were on target.

Normally I would say Reina, but he's on a massive streak of conceding penalties
I have no idea tbh.

This is a discussion where stats could provide a clear answer.

To be fair, it also depends on the taker. If a keeper has to save 5 penalties against van persie, kuyt, lampard, gerrard and tevez, and saves none because they're all top corner, and another one has to save 5 penalties against Poulson, Terry, Torres, Konchesky and Bebe and saves them all because they're in the middle and weak, does that make him the better pen saver?

Re: Best Keeper at Saving Penalties?
Lev Yashin apparently saved over 150 penalties in his career
But nowadays, it looks like Handanovic has the best record.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think it would skew the stats much. For one, penalties are a simple affair, and teams use their best penalty taker 99% of the time. I doubt SAF would go to Bebe or Daglish would go to Poulsen to take a penalty. So we can assume most of the time the goalkeeper is facing the best penalty taker on that team. The simplicity of penalties means that the level of player i.e. comparing the penalty taker for Blackpool v the one for Man Utd has a minimal effect IMO.
The point you made about how the player takes the penalty is valid, but no analysis is ever without a degree of error.
@Mick Stump: I wasn't necessarily saying Handanovic is the best, but I just thought I would share the stat.

Re: Best Keeper at Saving Penalties?
Tim Howard and Brad Friedel usually have a good record with saving penalties. Howard more so in shootouts though.
A couple of years back, when Friedel was still with Blackburn, he saved two in one game (and his opposite number saved one as well).

Re: Best Keeper at Saving Penalties?
Lehmann saved a Riquelme penalty therefore he's the best.
One thing I've noticed about Reina is that he goes to his left when the kicker is left footed and to his right when the kicker is right footed most of the time.

We were sooo lucky in the CL that year apart from the final. We had the longest clean sheet record in the history of the CL that season as well

Re: Best Keeper at Saving Penalties?
Almunia is actually very good with penaltys.
Reina is a good keeper but far from the best when it comes to penaltys.
Its got to be the german keepers.

I swear, since Sergei Pareiko came to Wisla Krakow this January, he has saved 4 or 5 penalties and only let in one.
