Louis van Gaal has been relieved of his duties as coach of Bayern Munich with immediate effect, the German club has confirmed.
The 59-year-old was due to leave at the end of the season but his departure has now been brought forward, with the club fourth in the Bundesliga and struggling to ensure qualification for next season's Champions League.
Van Gaal led Bayern to the league title last season, his first at the club, and also to the final of the Champions League. His assistant Andries Jonker will take charge until the end of the season, when Jupp Heynckes will succeed him as the new permanent coach.
Club bosses Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeness, Karl Hopfner and the director of sport, Christian Nerlinger, held crisis talks and subsequently informed Van Gaal of their decision to go separate ways last night after returning from Nürnberg, where the team drew 1-1."The board, director of sport and president of Bayern took this decision
together," read a statement from the club. "After the 1-1 draw in Nürnberg yesterday and the renewed slide to fourth in the table, and with the threat of missing out on the minimum aim of a place in the
Champions League next season, this decision was taken in Bayern's best interests. "Louis van Gaal's assistants Frans Hoek, Jos van Dijk and Max Reckers have also been relieved of their duties."
Bayern currently trail third-placed Hannover by a point and, were the season to end now, they would only be playing in the Europa League next season. Since the final of the Champions League will be held at the Allianz Arena
next year, failure to even qualify for the competition would be a severe disappointment for Bayern, who will now end the season without a trophy.
So they sacked the guy that got them into the Champions League final. What the hell are they thinking?

I really don't see the point. They're still one one point behind Hannover for the Champions League. Is bringing in a caretaker with 5 games left going to make that much of a difference? I think not.

Being one point behind a qualification spot is not the same as "struggling". They were going to let him go at the end of the season anyway, so why not let him stay for the remaining five matches? Chances are they'd qualify and he wouldn't be thrown out like used garbage after securing Bayern's first final since 2001.

The domino effect this and the sacking of Magath has had on the Bundesliga is really interesting.

Would love for them not to qualify after what Robben and Ribery were saying about the Europa league . Schalke and next weeks B.Levurkusen' derby will be tough games which they can easily lose. They also have to play St Pauli away, who are fighting to stay in the league.

Lets be a bit more realistic, shall we? We could be in the Championship next season by the looks of things.

The fact that he's leaving at the end of it anyway and that it's 5 matches left with 1 point behind Champions League qualification? Seriously, getting a caretaker in for 5 matches probably doesn't make much of a difference.

I've read rumors about him taking over our NT.

Wouldn't be a bad replacement! ... Even with the weak season he had. (bayerns standard)
Well any manager would probably be better. Olsen raus

Manager turnover is the thing I hate most about German football. Teams change managers way too often, and coaches just move from team to team willy nilly. Of all the things the Germans do -- they don't do manager retention well.

They were the ultimate underachievers this year and should still be in the CL but they chumped bigtime against Inter and allowed several late goals.

The squad doesn't exactly represent first place anyway

Apparently the PZPN are thinking of firing Smuda (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ) and signing van Gaal.
Don't want him - he has flopped at international managing horribly and hasn't exactly done amazingly elsewhere.
