NBC to air six live EPL games a week Empty NBC to air six live EPL games a week

    Post by Weather130 Tue Oct 30, 2012 5:24 am

LONDON -- NBC's networks will televise the English Premier League under a $250 million, three-year deal that begins next season.

They will show every match from the world's most popular soccer league, taking coverage away from Fox and ESPN.

"The Barclays Premier League is the pre-eminent soccer league in the world, and is on the cusp of exponential popularity growth here in the U.S.," NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus said Sunday.

The company picked up Major League Soccer last year and had success with its soccer broadcasts during the London Olympics.

Criticized for using tape delay with the Olympics because of time differences, NBC will not do so with Premier League games, Lazarus said. English-language broadcasts will primarily be on cable channel NBC Sports Network, with Telemundo and mun2 used for Spanish coverage.

NBC's English-language networks will televise six live games a week. One or two of the company's other cable channels will also be used, Lazarus said, but which has not been determined yet as schedules are evaluated. Other games will be streamed live online.

The company has been seeking to expand the audience of NBC Sports Network, which was renamed from Versus after its owner, Comcast, took over NBCUniversal.

"We think we're acquiring a set of assets that has unique affluent male appeal that's very attractive to advertisers and attractive to cable operators," Lazarus said.

And soccer is a potential area for growth with most sports broadcast rights currently under contract, though NBC recently signed a deal with the Formula One auto racing series.

NBC Sports Network's biggest property is the NHL, whose season runs concurrently with English soccer. The EPL will be a good complement to the network's hockey coverage, Lazarus said, adding live soccer games in the morning and afternoon to prime-time NHL broadcasts.

"It's a younger skewing sport than some others out there, like some that are in a championship series right now," Lazarus said, in apparent reference to Major League baseball and its older viewership.

The previous three-year EPL deal with Fox, that saw some matches sublicensed to ESPN, was worth about $80 million. NBC Sports Network is in about twice as many homes in the U.S. as Fox Soccer but about 20 percent fewer than ESPN.

The EPL has sold its TV rights in Britain to BSkyB and BT for 3.018 billion pounds ($4.86 billion) in a record three-year deal from the 2013-14 season.

The EPL said NBC will deliver the "biggest and broadest programming and promotion commitment ever in the United States" for the league.

"The NBC Sports Group has an excellent track record in sports broadcasting," EPL chief executive Richard Scudamore said.

NBC will now have rights to broadcast the EPL, F1, and NHL this is rather exciting. They have done a great job with their MLS coverage this year so it is rather interesting to see what next year will bring from them with their first Premier League games.

I kind of like Arlo White, but I am not sure he is better than Darke & Macca. Their old guy/young guy dynamic is superb.

NBC own something like 5 channels so I doubt they will have a need to do a lot of delayed games. Although I could see some fixture that lack much interest (like QPR v Wigan) to be shown on a delay. Since the stock markset is closed for the weekend then they could use that channel for some premier league games. That channel has a lot of infomercials and other junk during the weekend so

Maybe Fox Soccer can pick up some 2nd tier league like the Maltese Premier League and the Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio. I want to watch those league if they cannot have the EPL.

Just the CL and one hour of Football Asia per week. Oh, and the odd USL and NCAA matches that no one wants to see. Maybe even a little A-League action.

I bet they could get a good deal to buy the rights for these leagues, they might actually be able to get them for free.

To prevent the network for crumbling completely by losing the premier league fox soccer needs to take some action before they are gone completely. I think they should drop the soccer from the name of the channel and make it the fox football network. Right now I would find it more interesting if this network would show a little bit of every type of football out there, except from American football since we already have enough of that on television already. I would love to see some Gaelic football, hurling, and aussie rules football. I hope they consider some sort of change because the Champions and Europa league is not enough to keep this channel going in the future.

There is nothing FSC can do to survive, the CL will be the only thing that keeps them going but once they lose that the channel will phase out (they can try to get the Bundesliga but ratings will be low). There's really only room for two cable soccer channels in this country, and they are BIS and NBCSN now.

The scary thing is that maybe only one year ago you could say the two main soccer channels here were FSC and Goltv but now they are barely above water. It might be a good idea to phase out FSC Plus before more money is lost. Perhaps FSC in a desperation move could try to get either English or Spanish rights for the Mexican league since that is popular over this way. Their is not a conventional move they can make to save themself.

TV rights is a crazy business man, we don't see it shift a lot in the four major sports here but soccer is on the rise and shifting from the smaller guys to the giants.

Mexico is a good shout, but I think they will dissolve.
