My friend and I just carried this fluffy mothafucka through Withington and Fallowfield, got unreal attention from girls, may start taking it everywhere.

It's not stupid to think Jay Z isn't as great as he was when he rapped with Big L, his flow was faster and that was when he was at his best.

He's still one of the best rappers now but who does he honestly compete with? Eminem? He's awful now as he had to switch his style up to fit in with todays music. Lil Wayne....Flo Rider? Laughing

Eminem's last album was made bad on purpose, illuminati brah, and he is not awful. He is still one of the greatest rappers alive.

Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def etc. Are the best rappers alive imo.

The fact that you mentioned FLO RIDER explains everything.

Who is he competing with? Mainly...

    Kanye West
    Rick Ross
    Drake

These guys have been consistently hot for years now.

Lil Wayne, Em, Nas have been top 5 before but lately have fallen off, they have the talent but are not producing. Nas really stepped it up with his last album though.

Then you have a guy like Kendrick Lamar who are coming up huge.

Old Eminem was better due to the emotion and anger in his voice. He's just not the same, anybody who knows anything about 'Hip-hop' knows this.

Seems like you're basing this off lyricism, we aren't talking about lyricism, we are talking about whose hot right now.

Unforutantely rap has changed, in the 80s-90s the beats were simpler, and it was about telling a story and being clever with your lyrics, listen to Illamtic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, etc. the beats are really simple. Plain beat breaks, drums, some samples, etc.

Then in the late 90s-present beats have evolved, the rhythm and the tone set by the beat is more important than the lyrics to some extent, it's more about flow and how you say something rather than what you are saying.

EDIT: This is a bad example of high production / low lyricism because the lyrics are actually very good on this track, but the production is so loud, so bombastic, it's like stadium music.

So now to determine the best in the game you are talking about Lyricism, Production, Sales, Popularity, and I don't know how to call it but I guess "swag" or influence. And if that's what you are talking about the top 5 looks an awful lot like

    Jay-Z
    Ross
    Drake
    Kanye
    Wayne

You have to take all these things into account.

Hey, I love Blu, Below the Heavens is one of the best project of 2011, but see above. If we are talking about who is the best OVERALL, or who is the HOTTEST, there is more to account for than lyrics.

You're a terrible person to debate with man, you pick two things I say and ignore the rest. I think we generally agree on what is "good rap music" if you say "who are the best lyricists in the game" I think our lists our similar, if you say who is the hottest, it's different. We were talking about the hottest (most popular, biggest influence) yesterday, and that's what I'm talking about now. Stop nitpicking.

NO, LISTEN TO WHAT I'M SAYING.

Beiber is popular as hell, he sells well, sells out arena's, etc. And when you are talking about a hot artist that's a huge part, the other part is content, and he's terrible at that. He's a terrible musician but a good artist and salesman, there is a difference.

If I were to break down each rapper on my list based off of.

    Lyricism
    Sales
    Popularity/Influence

and some other factors then I think the rappers who I put out are going to be top 5, base it off lyricism alone and it's different.

Ok, so let's bring it back to the original points.

Musically, Jay-Z is still one of the best in the games.

Let's take a look at his last few projects

    Black Album - critically acclaimed,
    Kindgom Come - average/below average
    American Gangster - critically acclaimed
    BP3 - average
    WTT - critically acclaimed

That's 3 critically acclaimed albums, 1 average album, and 1 poor (to me) album. Take into account the features he's done and you can't say he's not putting out good music.
