I'd say give it one more season until thinking of doing something like that.

Re: Liverpool FC Official Thread
Can we realistically expect Gerrard to start 30+ games this season and lead by example like he used to? I do not think so. We need a captain who is ever present, is still improving, and will stay loyal for a few years at least.

It would be an awful thing for the club to do, especially at a time like this.

What has Gerrard done to warrant his starting position, let alone the captaincy, in the past two years?Jay wrote:You're all stupid if you genuinely think it's a good idea.

Re: Liverpool FC Official Thread
I'm not getting into talking about Gerrard as a player, but if Rodgers, a manager with no experience managing a club as big as Liverpool, comes in and strips a club legend of the captaincy, people will turn on him. If people turn on him, it will damage the chances of him being given the time to turn the club around and take us forward. If this happens, we're back to square one, all for the sake of changing the captain. It's common sense that he has to get as many people as possible on side as early in as possible, that's just how football is these days. Stripping Gerrard of the captaincy will severely harm his chances of doing this.
Rodgers isn't a stupid man, he knows what he has to do, and he'll know that choosing a new captain would be a ridiculous decision.

This is true. There's always that group of fans, who will criticise things like this. It's like when the badge was changed and they flipped out about the flames being put on the neck.

Are you okay with that? Are you okay with the fact that the manager's intentions are impeded by the idolisation of one player?Jay wrote:I'm not getting into talking about Gerrard as a player, but if Rodgers, a manager with no experience managing a club as big as Liverpool, comes in and strips a club legend of the captaincy, people will turn on him. I agree completely. And if he is unwilling to do so, then he is not strong enough to be manager. That said, I am not even sure if he wants to change it...this is all hypothetical.Jordo wrote:Jay wrote:I'm not getting into talking about Gerrard as a player, but if Rodgers, a manager with no experience managing a club as big as Liverpool, comes in and strips a club legend of the captaincy, people will turn on him. Re: Liverpool FC Official Thread
They won't take the captaincy off Gerrard, everyone idolizes him because he's a leader and the younger kids love him, he HAS the ability to inspire when he's playing and he can motivate the team, I doubt that anyone is louder in the Liverpool dressing room. They won't take the captaincy off him until he retires, or until he gives it up himself. He's a born leader and deserves it. Also, has anyone considered where that would lie with the English National Team? Gerrard is experienced, vocal and a leader, which is why he got picked to be England captain. If you took his captaincy away from him at Liverpool, would this affect him as England captain? I think so.
The day Gerrard is forced to hand over the captaincy is the day he'll retire, he'd give up.

Gerrard is probably one of the most respected players in the game.
Being the captain is over rated. Just for lifting trophies, and doing the coin toss. To much emphasize on one man, instead of the team. Roy of the Rovers shit which has plagued the English game.

I think that being "uncaptainacised" would be a humbling and positive experience for Gerrard. He has to realise that he is a decent player, but he is not half of the Steven Gerrard from 2005. Maybe if he was no longer captain, he would feel less pressure to perform?

I'm not saying that it's right, how the fans would react. But common sense means its obvious that it'd happen, and you'd be just as stupid as you think those people are if you actually believed that it was a good idea.
