A much more relevant statistic for a defensive player is the fact that we conceded more than we did in 4 of O'Shea last 5 seasons, and went out of the Champions League due to completely ridiculous defending and a lack of defensive midfielders to close out a game. We lost the title because of ridiculous defensive displays and a piss-poor midfield as well. We seldom conceded 4 goals at Old Trafford when we had O'Shea, and we never conceded 6.

And if he would cost more than he gained, why did Ferguson keep him around for so long?

Those two seasons are in the past, I am talking about the future, in competition with a rejuvenated Chelsea and the new Champions, Manchester City. If we rely on players like Welbeck and Chicharito to match up with Hazard and Aguero we are going to be hopelessly outmatched, and if we play with those two we're going to continue to get fucking raped in the midfield area.

Although I'm inclined to agree with you, I would personally consider Welbeck and Chicharito as quite excellent strikers who certainly improve our team. They are both fairly young and fairly promising strikers, who have a lot of untapped potential which could lead them both to becoming very impressive players in the not so distant future, that is especially true for Danny Welbeck.

As for your second point. As long as we have Wayne Rooney, there's not too much to be worried about there. He's shown for several seasons now that he's a class player who can carry the team exceptionally well. It would of course be great to have another striker akin to Rooney, however there really aren't that many players on his level available is there? Besides, I think you too would agree that at the moment improving our attack is second to improving our midfield, as that really needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.

I do fear that if we lost Rooney, or for some incredibly misguided and retarded reason sold him, we would be pretty much fucked, both in attack and in midfield, he's done wonders to cover up the cracks of this team.
