Spurs look like the more plausible deal, but i also think they could utilize him better and also need him more, im still a bit surprised over the relative low amounts of money being thrown around for him.

Found this on my usual ajax news flows, quite like it shows exactly what he is so very good at and some pieces of skill you don't see from CB's usually

He destroyed Schweinsteiger and Cacau. How's his positioning, Mukhoo? Does he go forward too often and leave gaps at the back?

Looks way more agile than I expected, especially for a central defender.

If we had got Vertonghen innstead of Vermaelen, I'm sure Vermaelen would have been the Ajax captain now and performed even better than Vertonghen and everyone would be jizzing over him.Splashy wrote:This!19Jones19v wrote:A poor mans Vermaelen

I don't think you could set it up like that, he goes forward a lot but you'd have to keep in mind that Ajax dominates a lot, in matches like against Manchester United he did a bit when we had control but against a weak team in the league he is carrying the ball forward quite often and getting in position for attack, (he has scored 10 goals this season and is shared 4th in the league and shared 3rd overall for the club). Although when we need to defend he is nearly always in the right position and i have rarely seen him get caught in a bad position, it can happen to any defender which it does, but more often he is the guy with the interception to stop the attack and push forward again.
It is very likely that if the transfer (and age) had been different for Arsenal and they had picked up Vertonghen instead of Vermaelen that everyone would be raving for him as he had gotten to evovle at a different pace at Ajax, and possibly not having so much of his time ruined at Arsenal ruined by injury, although the same thing could possibly have happened to Vertonghen. They are still slightly different, but i think they both could go in and be a bonus to most teams in the world.

Re: Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?
We tend to dominate possession as well so I guess that should work out fine. It's just that Vermaelen occasionally leaves massive gaps at the back and doesn't get back in time, although that can also be attributed to our, not very defensive, defensive midfielders who are quite lazy in tracking back (particularly when Arteta isn't playing). It sounds to me that he's basically a better version of Vermaelen in the sense that while he does offer an attacking threat, he is also a better instinctive defender with regards to reading the game through interceptions and tackles.
I noticed on that website you posted that his contract expires in June 2013. That's probably the reason the prices that have been thrown around aren't as high as what you value him at. Let's hope we can get him on a cut price.

Mertesacker was a horrible buy whilst looking at Vertonghen

He seems to get underrated after this season.

Re: Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?
I don't know, maybe. Mertesacker was defiantly better this season though defensively. If we didn't have Mertesacker, Djourou/Squillaci would have played and we wouldn't be on 67 points. He's a good back up player, a few Arsenal fans actually think he was a bad signing wtfGegilworld93 wrote:Vermaelen is still better than him .Grenade wrote:

Vermaelen was a beast when he was playing with Gallas. Our shit left backs and overly attacking "defensive" midfielders are probably a big reason why he's playing soo inconsistently now.

Re: Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?
If Ramsey actually dropped back and covered the left of the midfield then Vermaelen wouldn't have to keep running forward like a headless chicken to try and intercept. Sometimes he does it even when Arteta is covering but the lack of midfield discipline definitely does make Vermaelen look worse than he is.

Vertonghen will cost the same and tbh I agree, nonetheless everyone but Koscileny/Sagna has been crap

What Mal said, Gibbs not actually defending doesn't help him either

Yep. Seems like he's afraid of the big stage..and would rather slowly work his way to stardom then to go straight to a superior club and fight for glory.
Good luck to him..pussy.

Re: Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?
Kind of hoped he was waiting to see if Tottenham actually got CL, but seems he wasn't. Too bad that he will go from CL and Championship to competing for a CL qualification spot?
I still say Barcelona, work some magic De Boer and Cruijff

Re: Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?
I personally see him going to Tottenham for first team football and possibility of CL spot next year. With most of Tottenham's centre-backs leaving he's pretty much guaranteed first team football. And if not at CB he could probably play as a CDM (assuming Tottenham use a 4-2-3-1 formation and not 4-4-2).
