Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal./?

The Belgian defender, who was at the Emirates last week to watch Arsenal
beat AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League at the request of former Ajax
team-mate Thomas Vermaelen, has named the Gunners as a possible
destination.


"My agent knows what clubs I'm willing to go to. Arsenal are obviously one of them," Vertonghen said. "Ajax are busy trying to find solutions to replace me."

Obviously of the many clubs mentioned Arsenal would be one of the preferred although i could see him wanting to win more trophies.

Question for anyone that watches him, is he any good at filling in at defensive midfield?

If he can settle quickly then he is probably better than what you have, as he is not only excellent at interceptions and tackles, but can play dat pass or be a direct threat at goal if necessary.

Nope i wasn't but i regard him as pretty much better than any defensive midfielder in BPL maybe except Liverpool's Lucas (& Poulsen who both are owned by the wrong club ) . And Mancini was also at the game Manchester United - Ajax.

I think he could work with Kompany, they know each other from the national team, although im not sure how many times they have played in the central defense together.

Koscielny, Vermalean and Mertesaker probably all want first team football, and with a pretty much packed out midfield can't really see him getting too many games.

I'd take him regardless, he's better than Mertesacker and I'm pretty sure Squillaci and hopefully Djourou fuck off from our club this summer leaving us with 3 good centre backs, 1 ok one and 1 for the future:

Is he good at left back?

If he regularly plays in midfield as well I'd imagine he can play as full-back if need be.

He doesn't play reguarly in the midfield, he is primairly a CB, that is a misinterpretation of what i said or misinformation, he has played a few times as a DM for Belgium a while ago and sometimes his position at Ajax ends up being a defensive midfielder rather than a center back, what i said is that his abilities are perfect for a back line player as well as a defensive midfielder. He has also played fullback but it would be a waste and most teams would rather want pacey players in those positions, he is fairly fast for his size (6"2) but he is not fullback fast. Also wouldn't get much out of his shooting capabilities if he is supposed to make crosses, which at Ajax usually crosses are for him, and not by him.

He is inform in this weeks Fifa Ultimate team with a 85 for his performance in the weekend and no doubt the heightened speculation about his future.

I like him but I don't think we need him now, Koscielny is our #1 CB now and I can't imagine Verm being dropped. Vertonghen won't go to a big club to warm the bench either, no need for him in midfield and I'd prefer a genuine LB in the summer, would take Vertonghen though.

Come on man, I rate Mertesacker higher than most other people rate him but he isn't as good as Vermaelen.

Vermaelen and Koscielny, solid pairing those two, Mertesacker back up, if anything I'd see how Miquel would handle being back up before trying to splash the cash on Vertonghen.
