Maybe if he performed in the biggest games Arsenal or the Netherlands would have won something. He's only scoring in big games this season against Premier League defences that are either as watertight as sieves or from the penalty spot in Europe.

    You're silly.

You'll see Rvp holding this one at the end of the season:

    Here's one.

Well done, I think the current one is suitable though, I'm still not sure that's actually van Persie. The one in the OP has his name on it.

Huh? It's obviously him, and a much more suitable picture for the OP. Laughing

You asked who is the better footballer and most of the OP consists of selective facts, private life has nothing to do with their ability as footballers, neither do trophies (Prime example being Djimi Traore).

Anyway, van Persie is the better pure finisher in my opinion, the chance against Milan was a one-off, he probably thought he was offside too. RVP's better at shooting, volleying and he sets teammates better up in the final third while Rooney is a better long-range passer. I'd say Rooney has the better heading technique, RVP isn't that great for his size. Robin's dribbling and general technique is also superior to Rooney's. An area where Rooney is better is defending, whether that makes him a better footballer than RVP I doubt.

Now, why do you think Rooney is better than RVP as a footballer? (No trophies and awards bullshit)

It could be his brother or something, he's aged since then, I don't know what he looked like 7 years ago, not for sure.

Rooney is the better footballer for several reasons

    • He delivers in big games - (Eg. CL Finals 2008 and 2011, CWC Final 2008, CC Finals 2006 & 2009, multiple UCL Semi Finals & Quarter Finals) - and even if he doesn't play particularly well he works very hard for the team, van Persie is often completely anonymous or gets sent off.
    • Better passer
    • Better header
    • Just as good a goalscorer, even playing in a deeper position
    • Better temperament (and there aren't many players you can say that about!)
    • Will work harder for the team, in 2008 he played at left back in Camp Nou, 2009 he was often shifted to the left wing to accommodate Ronaldo, albeit foolishly on Ferguson's part, 2010 he took over the goalscoring duties and got 34 despite his season being effectively ended in March by injury, 2012 he is providing the bullets for a misfiring Welbeck and Chicharito and still putting in an excellent total himself.
    • Far more complete footballer basically. van Persie has become a glorified poacher this season.

And I know you said not to bring awards into it, but this is relevant. As for van Persie being better at volleys or long range shots, I've seen Rooney win the Goal of the Season award 3 times, how many times has van Persie won it? Exactly.

You're a tit. The stupidity of this article is highlighted by the bit where you praise Rooney's ability to work hard for the team because he played a supporting role to accommodate Ronaldo, and then criticise van Persie for doing the same with the Netherlands in the World Cup for the sake of Sneijder. Also, you've made a thread to ask who the better footballer is at the moment and when asked why you believe Rooney is you continuously provide evidence from as far back as 2006. Then there are thing that are utterly baseless such as calling van Persie a glorified poacher. Eight assists in the Premier League and an impressive number of key passes per match and he's somehow a glorified poacher? What the fuck are you even talking about? And an equally good goalscorer? Really? Rooney's best ever season from a goalscoring perspective was in 2009/10 when he scored a total of 34 goals in 44 games. Van Persie's already scored 32 goals this season and he's played seven less games.

The only bits of your argument that are even worth my time start with the claim about big games, and even then I disagree. Van Persie's proven that he's more than capable of stepping up in big games (he's scored against every team in the top five, except Manchester City, as well as several important goals in the Champions League, namely against Udinese, Dortmung and Milan), he just hasn't had as many opportunities in semi-finals and finals as Rooney has mainly due to having been part of an inferior team for most of his career and sometimes due to his continuous injury problems that he used to have. I'll give you the part about Rooney being better at headers, although that isn't exactly particularly significant. Better passing, I'd say they are about equal. Van Persie's better at short through balls, whereas Rooney's long passing is among the best in the world. Better temperament, probably about equal. Rooney's sending off in the 2006 World Cup comes to mind, although he's certainly matured more since then. And if you're going to criticise van Persie's temperament because he had one poor game against Milan, then I guess it's only fair to consider every time Rooney's been poor in an important game, e.g against Germany in the World Cup, Champions League final 2008/2009 etc.

And the bit about the Goal of the Season, well that was probably the stupidest thing I've read in a very long time.

He's scored twice against City. Other than that good post. I honestly don't think Rooney's long range passing is as good as people make it out to be. When Van Persie plays deep he is able to make good long ranged passes but playing at Arsenal he rarely has the opportunity to do so.

    Odd comparison.

Never did like Rooney, the first thing i remember of him was being sent off, and something with an elbow randomly to a opposing players face neither of them being anywhere near the ball.

On the other hand Van Persie is Feyenoord scum.

One is the key player for Manchester United, the No. 1 placed team in England and No. 2 ranked team in Europe (officially), the other is the key player for Arsenal, the No. 4 placed team in England who have been eliminated from Europe thanks to van Persie trying to chip the goalkeeper from about 4 yards. Prick.

One is a 4 time Premier League Champion, former European Champion and World Champion, having scored in Champions League and Club World Cup Finals, the other's greatest achievement is being carried to the World Cup Final by Sneijder and Robben, where the most significant thing he did was receive a yellow card (I had to look it up to see if he even played). He's won a UEFA Cup and FA Cup as well about 10 years ago.

One man allegedly slept with prostitutes, the other allegedly raped someone. On the pitch, their temperaments have been criticised, with Rooney sometimes lashing out at players, invariably in small games over the past 5 years, and van Persie doing the same as a young player. More recently both players were involved in massive games against Barcelona where their sides were completely dominated, Rooney reacted by scoring a goal and trying to help his team win, van Persie petulantly kicked the ball away because he disagreed with the referee and got sent off for an utterly stupid yellow card.

In terms of personal achievements, Rooney has been named PFA Player of the Year, Barclays Player of the Year, Man Utd, England and PFA Young Player of the Year twice each, and has been selected in the World XI. Van Persie won the Bronze Boot at Euro 2008, being the joint 6th highest scorer alongside 12 other players.

So who's a better footballer at the moment?

For me it's Rooney. Even this season, the best season of van Persie's life, both players have very similar goal ratios, despite Rooney playing in a deeper position than van Persie and being cut down by injuries and allegations about his and his family's private life. Rooney also delivers in the biggest of games, while van Persie does childish outbursts even at the age of 28 because he can't handle the pressure.

I think what you mean is that one 'man' did sleep with hookers (and a granny, and God knows what else), and the other was found not guilty with it being universally accepted that the affair was just a money-grabbing whore-scam.

Not really relevant to the question anyway. Van Persie is in a different class and has scored in virtually every game for Arsenal for about a year whereas Rooney has had his usual ten-game purple patches followed by ten-game scoring droughts. That's not even mentioning how awful he was in 2010.

Very similar goal ratios? Lol. RVP has scored 7 more league goals and scored against Man Utd, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea this season and Barcelona last. Yet he doesn't do it in the big games? Rooney is the inconsistent hothead who is guilty of 'childish outbursts' like kicking Bulgarians. All RVP has done is kick a ball away against Barca which we can all agree no one would remember if the referee hadn't made a jackass of himself. You know RVP is far superior and have resorted to utter nonsense.

I believe your dislike for English players is clouding your judgement. Rooney is probably the only English footballer where he is undeniably world class and would be a starter in almost any team not named Real Madrid or Barcelona and even then he might still start for those teams. Probably more Real Madrid than Barcelona.

27 appearances, 24 goasl, 3 assists, 1.4 key passes per game, averages 50 passes per game, and has and 80.8% passing success rate.

You'll be hard press to find players with similar stats(and yes, stats don't tell the whole story but they are probably the only concrete and undeniable thing about football)
