Best England can hope for now is Guus Hiddink. Any manager will struggle with only four months' worth of preparation though, especially in international football when the manager only meets the player once or twice a month.

He is a great manager, he is tactically brilliant, he promotes a strong discipline, and he plays to win. That's not really the issue.

Seriously though how often did we play top teams?

We beat Germany and Spain in friendlies, drew against Holland in Amsterdam and lost to France at home under him.

And of course Germany smashed us in the World Cup, one of two competitive defeats Capello suffered. That's what you get judged on internationally though. Won about 40/60 games with us, but getting smashed out of a tournament too early. That's what he'll be remembered for.

That's not strictly true. Certain managers allow more freedom than others, and while Capello is someone who demands tactical discipline, there are very successful managers who would rather build player's confidence, give them a few tips and let them go out there and do their thing (Redknapp, Ferguson, Guardiola).
