I thought about this an awful lot after I watched an episode of House entitled 97 Seconds (S04E03 if you're interested), I won't go into what happens in it, but yes, I have wondered about that. Even though the logical part of my brain knows it's a false question.

My theory is when you're dead it's like an eternal sleepless rest, but you're dead so all your memories and everything you've done is gone. It's a blackness. But you're not even conscious to see that. It's nothingness that you don't experience.

I have my own beliefs, and it just seems like, if everything I've been taught about death and life after is real, then why bother living here.

This is why death is my greatest fear, believing I'm going to experience nothingness, and that it's inevitable. My entire consciousness erased.

Yeah but mate, with the greatest of respect, your beliefs are a load of shit, everything you've been taught about death and the afterlife it's just old myths. There's a reason every religion that teaches about a paradise afterlife also has suicide as a cardinal sin, and it's got nothing to do with the veracity of the religion.

I think it's just logical to have a fear of it. Not existing anymore wont be nice at all.

Maybe when I'm old I'll be sick of living anyway, doubt it though.

You at least had consciousness to look forward to then, assuming you're talking about developing from a fetus to being born. After death there's just nothing.

Only consolation of death is that everything is over, you can't worry or think about anything anymore.

On the other hand, you can't enjoy anything anymore. I kinda understand suicide, because if nothing every made you happy, at least when you're dead nothing can trouble you anymore.

I mean before even that. Before you existed, that's probably what death is like. We all didn't exist at one point and we're all not going to exist at some point in the future. Maybe that means we might start to exist again for some unforeseen reason. shifty

I got happy for a second, but then I realized that if that's true I would've probably had past lives too, but I can't remember anything from them. It's the same scenario as I said, but yours is a bit more bright since you say consciousness can be passed on. Nothing you would've done in the past would matter still. It's still blackness for that past life.

    Depressing.

No, but I studied Philosophy, and the philosophy of religion was my strongest module by far. The subject was taught by a man who also taught RS. There were weekly mandatory RE lessons as well, but nobody really gave a fuck in them.
