I make France marginal favourites ahead of Germany and Spain. Fancy England could do well if they avoid injuries and Hodgson makes some smart decisions instead of trying to shoehorn everyone into positions they don't belong in, although that may be asking for too much.

Euro 2016 - 10th June-10th July
Starts tomorrow. Not a fan of the new format at all but it should still be a decent month of football.

Don't think England will do well. They'll probably top the group (it'd be a travesty if they didn't) and you'd think that if results go as expected they'll face one of Czech, Turkey, Croatia, Poland, Ukraine, Albania, Switzerland or Romania in the last 16. Those level of teams are about the limit of their abilities. After that the 1/4 final could be against 1 of Italy, Belgium or Portugal. England will seriously struggle against any of those teams.

I'd make Belgium clear favourites against England but Italy are shit and Portugal only have one player.

I just knew that Russia would score against us. I can't believe it took Hodgson well over 70 minutes to make a change when we clearly needed energy and inspiration from the bench.
Kane was definitely the biggest disappointment today. What is the point of bringing 4 strikers when you only play one and never substitute him when he is doing nothing right?

Slovakia have dealt with Russia with real ease here. Puts into to perspective how average that "good" England performance was.

Russia's performance is the footballing equivalent of telling your boss "I quit!" when he's about to fire you.

Even if they lose this Russia still have a pretty good chance of making the next round so I doubt they've given up just yet.

You think? There are a lot of possible permutations to work through but I'd say they'll seriously struggle if they get beat here. One point after two games, a negative head to head record against Slovakia and a -2 goal difference looks like they're in a very difficult situation to me. They'll probably need a win against Wales because their goal difference won't help them in the best third place qualification group.

Well yeah, that's what I had in mind. A win against Wales and they are guaranteed at least 3rd and almost certainly as one of the best 3rd placed teams. Personally I'd say thats a good chance for them.

Agreed. So was Sterling. Hodgson would be insane to start either in their next game.

Don't think Rooney or Alli played that well either. For the next game I'd like to see them 2 benched and replaced by Barkley and Wilshire.

Yeah Alli has been very disappointing. You look at the way Rashford played when he came on and that's the type of freedom and excitement people attached to Alli but he hasn't been anywhere near it. Guys on BBC said for them Rooney has been MOTM in both England's, don't think he'd been that good but he's not been outright awful either. Dier was been worse in my opinion, that goal against Russia has saved him from a lot criticism. He's lucky Roy didn't bring Drinkwater because Dier will almost always get in by default due to non-existent competition for his spot.

Rooney was actually rather decent in the second half. I think the personnel chosen for the midfield is wrong though, Dier is a very medicore 'destroyer' type of midfielder who offers nothing against inferior sides. He struggles a lot because Rooney is nowhere near as dynamic or an accomplished dribbler as Dembele is, and Rooney struggles because Alli is nowhere near as dynamic as an attacking midfielder should be.Keyser Söze wrote:Yeah Alli has been very disappointing. Re: Euro 2016 - 10th June-10th July
Everything you've said there is pretty much spot on to what I was thinking. Towards the later stages of both games when England flooded men forward and Dier was the deepest midfielder it was a struggle watching him try and pick a pass or cross. The problem with Rooney is you have a player that can offer a goal threat but one that should also be trying to pick those passes instead of Dier.
I honestly only see players like Wilshere, Barkely or Henderson getting a chance to have meaningful impacts on games if he drops Alli. Hodgson will never be brave enough to drop Dier and go for a more positive midfielder from the start. And given how well Vardy, Sturridge and Rashford did when they came on I don't think he'll be willing to sacrifice one of those options to bring on the later trio if England are chasing a goal.

Re: Euro 2016 - 10th June-10th July
Rooney hasn't done badly-he's really done rather well. He lacks the agility I expect from someone in midfield and he doesn't open up his body well enough, but he has shown a couple of good moments.
Kane has obviously been the biggest letdown. He hasn't gotten into the penalty area enough and his set pieces are atrocious, it's embarrassing that he is taking them when Rooney has a decent history of production from them. The two goals we scored today resulted from strikers doing everything Kane hasn't-the first came from Vardy gambling and getting into the six yard area, the second came from Sturridge continuing his run after making a pass forward. Kane has looked static, so perhaps the defense that he is tired holds some water. It's such a boring excuse to hear about an English player though.

Re: Euro 2016 - 10th June-10th July
Seems like everyone is laying into Roy for the changes he's making today (Starting Hendo, Studge, Vardy, Clyne, Bertrand and Wilshere), saying it'll backfire, etc. Seen people act like swapping Walker for Clyne is akin to swapping a WC fullback for a Division 2 fullback. (Same with Rooney/Hendo).
Really hope we smash it and win 3-0 or something with Hendo/Clyne assists/goals to shut those knobheads up.

When you're supporting England why would you care how well Liverpool players do? As long as they play well for Liverpool it really shouldn't matter.

Clyne has probably been England's best player, Henderson has been good also. Wilshere and Bertrand have been fairly awful.

Just as a set of results these group stages have been very poor for England. But going forward and looking at the draw it seems alright. Even as far as the 1/4 finals it's not too bad since it'll be France who themselves haven't looked great.

Re: Euro 2016 - 10th June-10th July
I think we are actually better suited to playing against a team like France than we would have been against Italy, the likely alternative from that situation.
I can't believe that people are singling out Henderson today. I thought he was punching above his weight and the overloading of our right hand side with Clyne was the only positive.
